she didnt buy any! They were almost $20.00 for a 4 to 5 pound roast. She drove to couple of other stores and finally found a decent price for them, but not by much. She said for a 5 pound roast was almost $13.00 and the 4 pound roast was almost the same. I get why things are higher priced right, but really $5.00 a pound and this was at a store where they push cheaper prices for all their things they sell!

(12,497 posts)One would think that the home of the famous 'Omaha Steaks' is a community flooded with meats for processing and shipping, and maybe have discounts for locals, like we can get discount seafood down at the docks or local fish/lobster stores. Although, I haven't been to the fish stores in months, so maybe they are price gouging too.

(25,467 posts)The cost of many items has gone way up. I paid almost $4 for a dozen eggs two days ago and some items have doubled. Some though are on sale; I got 10 cans of brand name tuna for $10.
This is like two months of snow days without the snow and the Grim Reaper hanging around the playground.

(4,615 posts)Partly because carbon is at 415 ppm. A typical meat and potato diet has about 6x the ecological footprint compared to a vegan diet. My individual action has no impact, when rounded for significance. But at least I dont have to participate.
(The other two reasons Im vegan: Its healthier for me. And I do less harm to the sentient creatures around me.)

(31,897 posts)A good round roast is always between 6 and 10 $ a lb.
I would think for a good quality roast, $20.00 for 5 lbs. is a very good price

For perspective, though, $13 for a 5-lb roast would have been a really good sale price for chuck roast here in Florida before all this. Even modest cuts have become expensive for retirees on fixed incomes. What she found was not price gouging.

(13,726 posts)We live in the Midwest and yes meat is cheaper, but for my mom who is on a fixed income it is expensive for her.

COVID killed our plan for deep-immersion sightseeing in DC this spring, and early on we'd considered hitching up our travel trailer and "bunkering" on lonelier roads, but the probability that other states would follow California's lead in stay-at-home laws put that idea away. We had some fun with our kids making up lies for when we were stopped, but wouldn't want to try them out.

Getting sick and tired of bean dishes and thankfully I can get dairy products and continue to make my own yogurt without difficulty, but obviously some are eating a hell of a lot better and with far more variety than I am. Good for them, I guess.

We are lucky to have our own chickens and way too many ducks. We get over a dozen eggs a day. As long as we keep feeding them, we won't starve anyway.

(51,308 posts)I hadnt been to the store in two weeks. Ventured out for fruit yesterday.
Amazed at how crowded the store was, and though I was wearing a mask, I felt very uncomfortable. Grabbed grapefruit quickly and was outta there.
No way in hell would I go to more than one store. I think Ill do curbside if I need something in the future.

(44,972 posts)I used to enjoy shopping, now it's like going to a war.
A lot of others were wearing masks, but many were not. People were wandering around, browsing, picking things up and putting them down.
I got out of there as quickly as I could. Not usually an easily frightened person, but I found myself really stressed by how close people were to me even in the short time I was in the store.
My state and county are not hot spots at this point, but I know there are at least 100 cases in the county. Probably double that considering the lack of testing. Scary times.

(10,885 posts)Unfortunately, yesterday's Sale prices were higher than regular pricing two weeks ago when I was out last. Price raise was most noticeable for produce, meat, fish and chicken.
The store looked like a war zone. Deli was shut down completely, and produce, meat, frozen items, paper and cleaning products were quite depleted. Had to make a lot of compromises in my shopping list.

(12,165 posts)Ive stopped buying it because we cant afford paying $10 for one steak.
My husband likes a recipe that uses skirt steak. This used to be considered a cheap cut of meat. Last time I bought it (for his birthday dinner last year), it cost $12 for a small piece.

(10,885 posts)Omaha Steaks. They're running some pretty good specials via both TV and their website. The initial payout may seem high, but you get a lot for what you're paying. All you need is the room in your freezer to store it all. That's where I run short - a very small freezer that's already stocked, otherwise I'd be ordering from Omaha Steaks also.
