Cruise Lines Were Shut Out of the Stimulus. Here’s Why.
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/08/travel/cruises-coronavirus-stimulus.html

Freepers are welcome to book cruises now to help that industry if they want. But there are reasons why they shouldn't get taxpayer bailouts.

I feel for the staff who were already financially strapped in many cases, but I'm not sure how you read "pity" in a comment that merely pointed out that the implication in the OP was incorrect.

Freepers are welcome to book cruises now to help that industry if they want.

I'm happy to book cruises (at significant discount) to take advantage of their position once things open back up... but I'll be tipping in cash.

The Cruise companies aren't getting bailed out.

It’s also the best postal service in the world.

It should not be run as a “for profit” enterprise. The Army, for example, is also constitutionally mandated, but nobody expects the Army to turn a profit. Our government MUST, if it wishes to fulfill its constitutional mandate, fully fund the USPS and insure its continued operation.

Also, the Postal Service actually pays into the Federal coffers.

Remember Trump's Tips for dealing with the coronavirus. The Postal Service delivered that free of charge. Congress is supposed to reimburse USPS for Franked mail, but they don't.

They privatize as much as possible. They love taking profits from the public, and love offloading risks and loss to public as well.

They'd love to destroy every public institution and replace it with a for-profit corporation. That's their goal.

for the Post Office, Trump personally intervened to get the money removed. The end of the Post Office will be the end of mail in voting.

The Post Office doesn't even need money, just repeal the law that it has to pre-fund benefits for workers 75 years in advance. It has a lot of money just sitting there not touchable.

Give money to the post office and there is no way a percentage of the money can be sent to the politicians, YES Trump, as a kickback.

I don't believe the post office has an arm of that agency that can make large donations to political figures. So there is no advantage for the Trumps in the world to enrich themselves by saving the USPS.

Give money to a corporation (Cruise Line) and they can legally as a "person" (Citizen United) kickback to the politician And YES I still mean Trump. In fact, I would bet that the percentages are negotiated before and money goes to the "corporate person".

At least that is the way I see all of the Trump decisions. WHAT FIRST BENEFITS HIM is the deciding factor. Never what is good for the country.

the option of bailing out neither one? Of course, I think the cruise ship industry is finally getting what it deserves, and years ago, I stopped feeling sorry for anyone who got on a bad Carnival cruise.

But, some 75% of what the USPS does is deliver trash around the country, using fossil fueled vehicles to spread junk mail garbage all over. Maybe raising postage rates is what needs to be done. It costs about fifty percent more to mail a letter in Canada than it does in the US. Maybe we should stop giving preferential mailing rates to overseas shippers, like China, who still uses the "poor little me" status it had in 1969.

The future is online communications. Maybe a buck a stamp will get more people into modern times. And it's time that the cost of sending parcels (yes, even mail order drugs) reflect what it actually costs to bring them to people's doorsteps. My lady and I use mail order drug delivery, perhaps instead of several packages over the course of a quarter, we can get all of our prescriptions delivered once every three months, with that 90 day supply.

There are all kinds of ways to make mailing more efficient, when it absolutely needs to be done.
