She texted "I may not vote as I do not believe Biden is up to the task ahead. He is leaning more toward Sanders. I am not for socialism. Democrats need to step up and find someone stronger."
My Reply:
"Social Securiy and medicare are socialism. Unions are socialism. Having paved roads and public schools are socialism. That (stimulus) check you are getting is socialism. If you don't vote (for Biden) you get 4 more years of trump. Repubs need to step up and find candidates that aren't crooks dedicated to lining their own pockets and destroying the USA."
This is a long-time friend who is a Democrat and votes Democratic. I think her grandson is hacking her phone. JC

(58,440 posts)Biden is old, keeps slurring his words, weak, can't stand up to the strain, yada, yada, yada.
They are priming the pump again, projecting Trump's failings onto Biden and proudly proclaiming Trump will win in a landslide.

It seems like you're saying she's a good Dem and is an early forerunner into getting 'fear uncertainty doubt' style info, from the repugs and their russian troll friends, that is designed to depress our side's turnout.

(16,692 posts)I am friends with him on facebook and he posted something that disheartened me, so I could expect something in this line from him, not from my friend. The family seemed to be generationally Democratic, but didn't seem to carry over to their youngest ones
I doubt he did that, but that is how shocked I am.

(9,308 posts)I thought the friend was leaning towards Sanders. If you think Joe is too socialist, I suggest voting for Gary Johnson or better yet, stop watching Fox News and look up what socialism actually is. Socialism is not rich people paying taxes.

(21,646 posts)full-throated endorsement" and your friend was a he, and he was a sanders supporter and not supporting biden
Maybe a lot of confusion where there should not be, as your post was quite clear to me
So why dont you ask her to text you some memory you share that son would not know?
or she could be like many- that sanders dislike is worse than trump four more years

(30,613 posts)Biden is in no way similar to Sanders; Biden's record makes any claim that he is "socialist" utterly ludicrous.
I say this as somebody who voted for Sanders, but I am now a Biden voter in the GE, despite the fact he is the opposite of Sanders.

(65,148 posts)Also, I would say that Trump wants plenty of socialism for corporations. It is like here, industry, come get your funds! He even wants to leave oversight out of it.
Socialism as she sees it is really just help for the 99%. Common sense things that get a bad reputation party from big media.

(54,056 posts)There are a few words people use to throw at each other these days, and more than half of them can't explain what they mean when asked what it is they object to.
I get the impression that if some people were asked to explain what they were for, and what they objected to, they would be completely incapable of expressing themselves if they were barred from using the terms liberal, conservative, socialist, corporatist, corporate, or establishment. They should say what they mean without resorting to stock terms that are so vague that they themselves couldn't tell you what in the world they are talking about.
If someone thinks that they should withhold their vote for Joe Biden because he is tending towards "socialism," they need their voter's registration taken away until they can prove they know WTF they are talking about.

Look who will heal the country vs who will create civil war.
And if your friend is really a Democrat she would never even think of staying home or voting for Trump. I think many Bernie people might need to have time to grieve, why its better he got out now. Most will come around by November.

(16,692 posts)I'd rather be on here. But the battery died, and I wanted to try to get over to my daughter's house to monitor the kids, which was where I was supposed to go today, or I wouldn't have bothered. I didn't make it, but she is home now, and all is well. At least for now. I am a stronger person for my effort today :/
I like the idea of asking people to describe what they want in government. My friend mentioned the forgiveness of college loans being a concern to her (socialism). I have other friends who think it is unfair for the loans to be forgiven, like the students will get something for nothing. I don't think they understand the crushing debt that new grads are carrying. My family got their loans paid off, but if others people can benefit from loan forgiveness, I hope it happens. After this complete social and economic disaster, I think we'll have a lot of harm to undo before progressive and enlightened ideas like this can be implemented.
I like Biden. One of the other things I told her that he is her age and stills jogs, which I hope appeals to her commitment to physical fitness. I also said that he knows what experts he needs to fill jobs and he won't act like he is the only person in the world who knows anything. I'm all in for Mr. Biden and I hope I can use the persuasion I see on the replies to get her out there to vote. We have mutual friends who will vote for the Democratic candidate, who is probably going to be Mr. Biden, and I'm sure they will help convince her to vote.

They're desperate and unimaginative. Negative campaigning is all they have when Trump's the worst President in history.

(14,491 posts)That is the exact attitude that got us where we are today. So fucking sorry that she would prefer the orange fucking maggot over a caring, smart, and qualified man. By not voting she is voting from 4 more years of this.
We all know trump has to have a mass casualty every year.
Maria, Kurds, Covid. I guess she figures she is exempt from trump's narcissism. Sooner or later it will land on her doorstep and if she doesn't vote straight D, she has no fucking sympathy from me.

(24,355 posts)Aside from some of the smears I won't repeat here, they basically complain that people aren't going to be enthusiastic enough to get to the polls. To which, I say, if getting rid of Trump and making sure he doesn't replace RBG and, possibly, Breyer, doesn't work to get your a** to the polls, then I don't know what to tell you. Not everybody was crazy enthusiastic about Bernie either. I wanted Warren, but if Bernie had won the nomination, it still would've been a no-brainer to go out and vote for him in November. I almost feel like some Bernie fans *want* Biden to lose to Trump so that they can come back to the rest of us and taunt us with their prophecy, which would likely be in part to some of them refusing to vote or voting third party.
