The virus has not gone away, nor will it likely one day "magically disappear", as Trump once prophesied. More cases and more deaths will occur, there is no vaccine, no widespread testing, no certified treatments, did I mention no vaccine yet? So, how will it be safe to stop social distancing and "re-open the economy", by which I assume Trump and his minions mean that they're going to deem it safe for people to go back to work and, basically, back to their more or less normal lives while this virus continues to ravage through the country? Anybody on the inside asking these questions (probably not)? They have a daily platform to talk about this sort of thing, but AFAIK they're not really. Before any of us go back to work, before any business thinks to call their workers back to work, before any state governors (the ones that smartly followed medical advice and shut things down) tell their citizens to go back to their "normal" lives, they'd better think long and hard about this. Before any us go back to work or to our normal lives, we need to be prepared to push back against them if there's no reasonably safe and scientifically sound plan for us.

(82,849 posts)Plans are for losers and chumps. Donaldus Maximus will call a new economy into being using just the power of his word and will. Only the unfaithful and the apostates will fail to recognize the greatness of his action. They will be marked for annihilation, and the righteous will rejoice over their fitting demise.

(17,757 posts)in a nutshell is to roll the dice and see what happens. If we have wave II we can always blame it on Obama.
Encouraging people to return to normal activities, even with some precautions, is a formula for further disaster. I do not think that he is capable of projecting what a second wave would do to the people and the economy. This is a time for a steady hand on the helm, instead we got Trump.

(24,456 posts)We got lucky in 2009 and 2014 with Swine Flu and Ebola, respectively, because we had amazing leadership from President Obama. The Ebola one could have gotten extremely nasty under leadership like what we have now (can you imagine what the racism would have looked like with that), but, despite dealing with a ton of s**t from Republicans (and one Donald J. Trump BTW), it was safely contained with 2 deaths (RIP) and Ebola hasn't reared its ugly head here since then.

(5,664 posts)People are hurting. There will be another spike in COVID cases if the country reopens, that is a given.
While, I will be practicing all that I have learned during this time and self-isolating, wearing gloves, masks, eye covers, washing hands, not touching my face, etc., I have to face the fact that my Governor will do what he wants and I will just have to be smart and remain vigilant.
You are right that we should push back. I just feel that there are many people who are tired and defeated and they will not push back because they feel trapped and alone. DU is a very small subset of the US. We are fortunate to have this forum and each other during this time and through all the others times past and future.
I will do my part in pushing back. Writing my congress people and volunteering when I can. But that is all I can do.
Stay well.
