It has been a long time since I started a thread, so please bear with me.
There are murmurs again about the GOP closing the Post Offices: simple answer, they can't
The GOP has been hellbent on shuttering the USPS for decades, that way, their "sponsors", UPS, FedEx, Deihl, et al.
Once again, the genius of Ben Franklin strikes a beautiful chord in our lives.
Article 1; section 8:
"To establish Post Offices and post Roads"
That's it. In section 1: news, private and public was seen to be essential, it still is.
By Federal Law, mandated by the Constitution, the government must maintain Post Offices and Postal Roads.
I bring this up because of COVID-19 and other situations are trying to get some GOP sloths to shut down
the USPS. By the fortunes of the gods, most R's have never read the Document that is the basis of our democracy.
At one point, Trump was asked to read a portion of the Constitution; not in the beautifully melodious and antiquated
calligraphic style, but New Times Roman 14pt. He complained, "these words are hard, can't we break this down?" I
had read and understood the Constitution since my third year in school.
As we go through COVID-19 or anything else that may come down the road, all of the oral platitudes, prayers, and
words of sympathy will never replace that card you get, unexpected, delivered by the USPS that will forever remind
you that you are loved and someone from across the country was willing to show it, expecting nothing in return
except your acceptance of that love.

(21,106 posts)I've seen things in the last 3 years that I never thought ANYONE could get away with...much less the President of the United States. Nothing that happens in Washington surprises me anymore. It only makes me sad and mad.

(3,401 posts)Clear constitutional meaning has no bearing in this day and age.

(11,097 posts)The "Postal Clause" authorizes the Congress to create a postal service. It does not require it.
If the Congress decides to starve the USPS in favor of for profit delivery service, it can do so. I recommend against complacency. If the USPS is important to you - and it absolutely should be - tell your representatives.
