U.S. Surgeon General, tells black people, Latinos and other ppl of color to avoid alcohol and drugs

U.S. Surgeon General, tells black people, Latinos and other ppl of color to avoid alcohol and drugs and adds: "Do it for your abuela, do it for your grandaddy, do it for your Big Mama, do it for your pop pop."

----------------

I hate this sterotyping crap. Do people of Color abuse alcohol and drugs more than white people? why to rub in those sterotypes.

and would have perhaps been helpful in the OP

NPR, 04-10-20
- snip - "The chronic burden of medical ills is likely to make people of color, especially, less resilient to the ravages of COVID-19. And it is possibly, in fact, likely that the burden of social ills is likely contributing," Adams said, noting that many African Americans and Hispanics do not have the types of jobs that allow them to telework or remain at home.

Adams said that there is no scientific basis to believe that people of color are "biologically or genetically predisposed to get COVID-19," but that they are "socially predisposed to coronavirus exposure, and have a higher incidence of the very diseases that put you at risk for severe complications of coronavirus."

Adams also said that it was even more important for communities of color to adhere to the White House task force's guidance and cautioned that they should avoid alcohol and drugs. He also urged Americans to check in on family members.

Why single out blacks and Latinos? I would think it would apply to everyone. I agree that it is very offensive.

So,you assuming that ALL black folks, Latino, Asian, etc should stay away from drugs & alcohol, (as if POC are the only human beings that have issues with substance abuse... ) BUT is A-OK if you're white because somehow, MAGICALLY, Melanin deficient Caucasian don't have issues like that. If the truth be known, I've NEVER heard anyone of color use the term,"pop-pop"

I know FAR more folks who have issues with substance abuse who're white, I have a home near Sacramento & acreage up north in Tehama county, looking for another LARGE piece of land in Humboldt county ...See my post on El Dorado county CA & Good Grief, Placer has an abundance of tweakers...

Just sit back & watch as this really hits the far larger communities in Appalachia,Tennessee, Mississippi, (cuz we're NOT China), Kentucky, ALA-FUCKING-BAMA, SC, NC, West Virginia, Virginia, Louisiana, Georgia, Florida....This is hitting the POC communities hard due to low income, etc BUT watch what happens when it hits the SAME TYPE OF COMMUNITIES, with the same issues, OFTENTIME WORSE in the deep south, where the substance abuse problems that are FAR worse than the inner cities. Vaping, (I know that some people have a problem w/my opinion but it's based in fact), is HUGE in alot of these places. You're going to hear about people dying en masse, only being found when the odor gets the attention of neighbors &/or service workers, (power technicians, phone techs, cops making welfare checks)...I read that folks are already being found deceased in homes in some of the states in the east coast. JUST.WATCH.WHAT.HAPPENS....

They were fact-based. When he talked about 1 in 3 black boys having asthma, he pulled his own inhaler out of his pocket. His comment about doing for family was in a cultural context, nothing more.

Everyone is focused on docs, nurses, first responders, but there is a whole army of low-wage workers who also work in hospitals as CNAs, cleaning and maintenance staff, etc. Look around next time at exactly who they are - many are people of color - and they aren't at the top of the list for PPE.

feeds into stereotypes. Regarding drugs and war on drugs... there are studies that show that whites are as likely or more likely to use drugs. Righties love to push the stereotypes.

Due to underlying health issues, and more apt to die for the same reasons.

Be healthy as possible - everyone - as he said.

He was asked about the higher % affects on AA, not whites.
