is being extremely kind. My mortgage is on hold for another month (started in February) phone and electric won't cut off, credit cards offering extensions. Not that they won't be there later, but right now, it seems many are offering a cushion.

I am astonished how some people on here seem to think it's fine or sustainable to keep this lockdown going for more than a few weeks. It just isn't. Maybe if we had a better social safety net already in place it would be, but we don't, and efforts to establish one on the fly have largely failed because neither the federal nor state governments are prepared. This isn't about "dying for the DOW" - it's about people like my clients who work in restaurants and are out of work. Some of them are undocumented and can't even get the measly $1200. If we keep this going for too much longer many small businesses will fail and will never reopen. Middle class people are seeing what little they have saved for retirement wiped out as they dip into it to cover sudden unemployment. This can't go on forever. I can't believe some people on our side seem so callous about this and think anyone worried about the economy - and the most economically vulnerable in particular - is being greedy or putting profits over people.

They are fine with everyone staying home indefintely since their income is guaranteed. I get that they are also the high risk group but we can't have 10's of millions out of work long-term. The longer this goes on then the job loss will just continue to get worse which will make the recovery more painful.

If we open up the economy to save the economy and the virus starts spreading again, thousands more Americans will die and then will will have to shut it down again. Which may be worse.

The problem is and has been, Trump completely fucked up. There may be no way to save the economy no matter what we do. There may be no way to save thousands of lives. Sometimes you can't fix incompetence, corruption.

But I think he's wisely straddled the fence on restrictiveness, making it so that if the lockdowns work and the virus is less severe than projected, people will think he was right all along and will blame their Democratic governors for overreacting and tanking the economy and encroaching on the constitution. He's putting Dems in a no-win situation and they are falling right into his trap.

Politics aside, I'm very concerned about the long-term health impact of putting off so-called "elective" surgeries and procedures for too long. I read a story on Politico about this guy who normally could have treated his prostate cancer with a vaccine injection, but because it wasn't considered critical enough to use PPE for, he had to have his prostate and bladder removed in a hurry, before that option was foreclosed too. Maybe that PPE will save someone's life who needs coronavirus treatment, but it's such a massive and unnecessary decrease in that guy's quality of life for the rest of his life. And other people are having to put off things like treatment for cancers that could be much more serious by the time they are able to get treatment. Why is saving someone from COVID more important and more worthy of PPE than saving someone from cancer?

What we have witnessed from Trump is pure madness. No matter what we do we may not be able to fix it until Trump is gone and the damage has run its course.

It has happened many times throughout history. This may be one of those moments.
