Some churches prepare to hold phone and video services on Easter amid virus

Governors in several states have deemed church an 'essential service,' allowing Easter worship to proceed amid a pandemic that has killed more than 14,000 people in the United States.

At the holiest time of year for Christians, churches are wrestling with how to hold services amid the coronavirus outbreak, and in some cases, that has set up showdowns with local governments over restrictions that forbid large gatherings.

Many churches are offering parishioners livestreaming options so they can observe Good Friday and Easter on TVs, smart phones, and computers. Others are sending worshipers to drive-in movie theaters for services.

Governors in several states have deemed church an "essential service," allowing Easter worship to proceed even as public health officials warn that large gatherings could be a major setback amid a pandemic that has killed more than 14,000 people in the U.S.

The restrictions have created conflicts with state and local authorities. Kansas lawmakers on Wednesday threw out an order by the governor that limited church gatherings to 10 people. A Georgia church where more than 30 people congregated inside a small building on Palm Sunday, prompting a visit from state troopers, plans to move forward with normal Easter worship.

I see this wing nut saying this statement:

In Kansas, state Senate President Susan Wagle, a Wichita Republican, said her phone had been "ringing off the wall" since the Democratic governor restricted the size of religious gatherings.

"It appears to be out of line and extreme and clearly in violation, a blatant violation, of our fundamental rights," she said. Religious leaders and congregants have made similar arguments elsewhere.

My church held Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services virtually through Zoom and will do the same on Easter.

services. And that includes Jews, Hindus, Muslims and others out here. It'll be intere



sting to hear stories about the Zoom seders.

It's a UU church so a bit out of the fold of most others, but the shared feeling is that we would violate many of our core principles if we exposed anyone to such danger.
