I've been watching the lines at food banks. MSNBC had a piece on how much food banks are spending. They are all broken by this. Many are already bankrupt and spending donations as quick as they get them. Food surplus has dried up, so they are buying food directly.
I'm thinking about writing Sherrod Brown about it. Something in the form of direct aid to food banks needs to be n the next relief bill.

(13,091 posts)I received a call this morning that my food stamp benefit had increased.
I called the number on my card and the amount has already been added.
For a single person the benefit more then doubled.

(1,165 posts)It may have come from that. Brown is good about dealing with these things. Ohio Republicans, not so much.

(1,165 posts)Not sure what percentage of that went directly to food banks. Some did.
It needs to be more.

Mission
Feeding America is the nationwide network of 200 food banks that leads the fight against hunger in the United States. Together, we provide food to more than 46 million people through 60,000 food pantries and meal programs in communities across America. Feeding America also supports programs that improve food security among the people we serve; educates the public about the problem of hunger; and advocates for legislation that protects people from going hungry. Individuals, charities, businesses and government all have a role in ending hunger. Donate. Volunteer. Advocate. Educate. Together we can solve hunger.

(14,489 posts)Many of the food banks under Feeding America's wing have their own web sites and we can donate directly to them if desired when we prefer to keep our contribution local.
For example, last week there was a drastic need expressed in an article posted on DU about an area in Mississippi that needed help right away. I found the site for the Mississippi food bank group (I believe in Jackson) and sent a little their way.

And everyone shrugs, (even Atlas) and says, so who's going to buy the stuff that the robots build and use the services the AI provides?
Well, I guess the market will just be exclusive to the currently affluent and the rest of us can...ah, bugger off?

Fuck em all. We vastly outnumber them. Time for a little fun. The Hunt!! Start with Trumps, McConnells, and GOP Congress. Who would not love tracking Jr and Eric on a big game hunt? Daddy trump no challenge. Would be like tracking a bloated ass sloth through the salt flats. Maybe use stadiums and throw their asses to predictors. Mauling of trump spawn would be so fun. An you hear Jarod steaming like a hyena. He would hit higher notes than Mariah Cary ever dreamed of. If this is the end, lets go out with pleasure.

And when my "relief check" comes, I'll be donating that amount to them as well. I'm fortunate that I'm in a position to do that, and I realize many aren't. That's why it's critical for those who can to support these great services.
I know food banks' problems go beyond the financial realm at the moment, but contributions surely can't hurt.

(10,885 posts)We have family members receiving the full amount, and others receiving the scale, but fortunately none of us need to rely on the stimulus payment for survival. It will be put to much better use by the food bank organizations.

(14,489 posts)* People not eating out and cooking at home is stripping the grocery stores bare. Therefore, the store surpluses of the past that supplied food banks have disappeared.
* Stresses throughout food supply chains are causing scarcity, and the issue of meat shortages or very high prices have already hit most parts of the nation.
I have no doubt of the generosity of our general public but hope those of high wealth step up to the plate and give 'till it hurts.
Breaks my heart to not be able to give more and with dozens of charities waiting in the mail pile.....

(58,785 posts)any lingering anxiety taken care of years ago by laying in a few months of rice and dried beans. Not just insurance against hunger during far greater emergencies than this, but as a nonpharmaceutical anxiolytic. I recommend it to those who were affected by this post.
I also recommend not posting things like this. Starvation is not boredom with limited variety in meals, or even a little bit of occasional hunger.
That observation comes from someone who spent much her childhood homeless and not infrequently hungry. But, as you can infer, I didn't actually starve.
Starvation is a very painful and dreadful tragedy that is a almost moral crime to frivolously minimize as if it weren't dreadfully real to way too many. Starvation takes, and is taking, babies and children, and other fragile people first right now, far away.

But let's take note: NO ONE STARVED.
And imo, it it is egregious to dishonestly use this child's and mother's tragedy to support the inflammatory idea of impending widespread starvation in the U.S.

(2,375 posts)A Texas food bank distributed more than 1 million pounds of food to about 10,000 families, whose cars sat bumper to bumper in a parking lot for the record-setting distribution event this week amid the coronavirus crisis.
About 6,000 households preregistered on the San Antonio Food Banks website for Thursdays distribution held at Traders Village, Food Bank president and CEO Eric Cooper told the San Antonio Express-News.
But thousands more showed up for the giveaway and aerial photos show the parking lot chock-full of cars. Cooper called it the largest single-day distribution in the nonprofits 40-year history.
It was a rough one today, he told the Express-News. We have never executed on as large of a demand as we are now.
