(CNN)Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam announced Sunday that he signed a series of new measures into law aimed at expanding access to voting in the commonwealth.
The new legislation will establish Election Day as a holiday, remove the requirement that voters show a photo ID prior to casting a ballot and, expand early voting to be allowed 45 days before an election without a stated reason.
"Voting is a fundamental right, and these new laws strengthen our democracy by making it easier to cast a ballot, not harder," Northam said in a statement. "No matter who you are or where you live in Virginia, your voice deserves to be heard. I'm proud to sign these bills into law."
Several states and cities have already made Election Day a civic holiday, including Delaware, Hawaii, Kentucky and New York. State offices typically close, though it depends on the state whether employees are entitled to paid time off to vote.

(12,712 posts)Proving that you can have a real American State with a real American Governor working hard to do what matters most for the people. Virginia is becoming a model and a beacon and here's hoping more states will escape their Republican captors and become truly free again and enjoy liberty once more.
None of that unreal, pseudo-American, pretend patriot, so-called pro-life, let's get all wacky and distracting with wedge issues, Republican "We love the wealthy" and "Go stocks, go!" political, Russian-inspired, country destroying, self-serving, power grabbing faux morons, (to get away with it and be more like the base).
Yes, not only tell them what they want to hear, but what to want to hear! Branding tyranny as red, white and blue patriotism is the new Right. Gooooo tyrants! And they score.
Of course, the people the GOP leads around by the nose just saw an blank, white space there, or maybe fuzzy words that spell, own them libruls, or something like that. Imagine all the people who are walking around with no noses because they cut them off to spite their faces.

(25,848 posts)is far, far better than the day being a national holiday.
Too many states (I'm looking at you Pennsylvania, and you New York) have election day only voting. If that one day were made a holiday, even fewer people would be able to vote because all of the retail establishments would be holding election day blow-out sales and their employees would not find it possible to get to a polling place, especially if they work some distance from their polling place. And probably very few businesses would close all day, despite the holiday designation.
Actually to go to a complete vote by mail as Colorado, Washington State, and Oregon have done is the best solution.
