Black people account for 72% of COVID-19 deaths in Chicago while making up less than a third of city

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said Sunday that nearly three-quarters of people who have died of COVID-19 in Chicago were Black despite the fact the city's population is just 30% African American.

Lightfoot, who made the comments on CBS' "Face The Nation," said she directed that those administering COVID-19 tests in the city to also begin to record demographic information of the people being tested.

"You start by making sure you've got the data," Lightfoot, who has been Chicago's mayor since last year, said.

According to data from the US Census Bureau, Chicago's population is 49% white and 30% Black.

People pick whatever they have a tool for discussing and whatever fits their view of the world.

Otherwise it's complicated and you're left with Lightfoot's "we need data". In fact, we probably need more data than she realizes or expects could even exist, given her degrees in poli sci and law.

Under Scott Walker, Wisconsin was the worst state in the nation to raise a Black child--without the virus.

It's not as prevalent in some areas not because of race but because of circumstances that make transmission harder.

Even the white populations in urban areas have higher COVID infection rates than in suburban and rural areas. Urban environments are going to facilitate spread. In the North, AA populations are disproportionately urban.

I've seen numerous videos of CPD breaking up massive parties and kids are still out on corners. Combine that with a population that is above the average when it comes to obesity and health conditions that are susceptible to this virus and you have a disaster in the making.

Too many people are carrying on as if nothing happened. They aren't practicing social distancing and they're allowing their children to play with all the other kids in the neighborhood. If you're going to stay healthy, you have to keep those hands washed and stay away from others as much as possible.

number that includes Middle East, North African, Hispanics who identify as White, etc
