(25,857 posts)but when I get my stimulus money, half is going to a local homeless shelter, the other half to a local food bank.
I am very fortunate that I am retired, live on a fixed income which is perfectly adequate, and so I don't need the money as much as others do.

(25,857 posts)that would have been perfectly fine two or three months ago.
You might want to call the shelter you'd otherwise volunteer for and ask what you can possibly do for them.
If nothing else, is there a sewing machine in your house and can you make masks?
Can your kids check in with neighbors, especially elderly ones, and offer free delivery? Or even offer to do yardwork?

(25,857 posts)I have volunteered at a local homeless shelter for nearly a decade now. I work in the kitchen, preparing and serving food to the homeless. I love doing it. It's hard work but incredibly gratifying.
Because the shelter houses people in a dormitory situation where there is almost no separation, I understand they've stopped taking in very many people but have been able to send their clients to local motels. There's also a disused college campus here (here being Santa Fe, NM) and volunteers have done the minor repairs and upgrades needed in the dorms and now homeless are being housed there.
This is surely not the only city finding a creative solution to the homeless problem.
What I want most to point out is the community aspect, that people are coming together to solve problems.
