It's weird, because the actual deposit doesn't show, by my available balance is $1200 more than the balance. I know that doesn't make sense, but this is sort of what my account looks like right now at my bank's site:
Current Balance: 1,200.00 more than the balance listed a bit below
Available Balance:1,200.00 more in this account than the balance given below
Then comes all my transactions this past month: deposits, debits, checks paid, and so on. And it's quite weird to see an amount of money in the current balance line at the top which is significantly above the last balance given.
Anyway, I want to share with all that I've gotten that money.
Now I'm going to give it away. Half to the local homeless shelter where I volunteer, half to a local food bank. I am sincerely grateful that I can do this, that I don't desperately need this money to pay my rent, or buy food for my kids.
Update: Not only was I able to send the money directly to the two groups, the homeless shelter and the food bank, I have already gotten an email thank you from each of them. I was able to tell them that it was the stimulus money, and that it was split between the two. I am so lucky and so glad I could do this.

I do hope those on disability get theirs very quickly.

(10,194 posts)As long as I get my SS Ill be ok. The stimulus will be extra if/when I get it. I read big banks would get it first and I just have a credit union.

(25,855 posts)and made the donations to them.
I cannot express how joyful I feel.
I know, especially because I do the volunteer work at the shelter, how very much every single donation matters. I am genuinely happy to give away this money as soon as it came to me.
added on edit:
The homeless shelter allowed me to designated the money anyway they wanted. The food bank asked me to select a category, and I went with the Covid-19 support, even though the other categories (General operations, food for kids, mobile food pantry, diaper depot, and food for pets) are also worthy. Honestly, I'd have preferred to give it to them in a way that allowed them to spend it as they see fit. But I'm getting this money because of the Covid-19 thing, and so I'll distribute it that way.

(25,855 posts)I just don't want anyone who posts here to think I'm doing a "I'm more virtuous than you" bullshit. It's not that. It's that I have the genuine good fortune to be able to give this away.
A very large percentage of those who get this money need it desperately to pay the rent or buy food, and I get that. I have in the past been poor enough that an occasional free meal was a huge help in my budget. I went hungry more than once growing up, and I only got desperately needed dental work when I was a teen thanks to a specific Catholic charity dental clinic in Tucson. So yeah, I've been there. Which is why giving this money away as soon as it hit my checking account is incredibly easy. Others need it a lot more than I do.

(6,679 posts)Several of us old ladies here in the village have adopted a family with 40 something Dad out of work and Mom recently passed away after a long illness. Earlier in the month we talked him into opening an account at the local credit union specifically so we could make deposits to it whenever we can. Mine will go there.
It's practical and serves the purpose of the "stimulus". In my bank account it just sits there. I have everything I need. For this family, all the money will go back into the economy in reasonably short order.
Actually, it would be more truthful to say this family kindly adopted some widowed ladies who don't have any kids or grandkids.
PoindexterOglethorpe
(25,855 posts)I don't happen to know any such family, but I truly love what you old ladies are doing.
I'm likewise an old lady, and my income, modest as it may be, is more than enough for my needs.
Back when I first learned about this money, I thought I'd move it to a savings account that's earmarked for travel. It certainly would have been a nice addition to the travel money, but really? It quickly occurred to me that Pete's Pets (the homeless shelter, which is officially the Interfaith Community Shelter, but goes by Pete's Pets because the building was originally a pet supply store) and the Food Depot (which I've also worked with) needs it a lot more than I do.
If I'd been connected as you are to a local family in need, I'd likewise give them my money.
Here's what a lot of people, meaning the media, are missing about what's going on right now: what you and I and countless others are doing with the stimulus money. How vast numbers of people are sewing face masks and donating them to hospitals or anyone who needs one. My sister is a seamstress, has made several hundred such masks in the past few weeks, and sent me six. The envelope arrived today. I'm keeping two for myself. Giving three away to three specific friends, and will have an extra in case I come across someone who needs one. My sister now carries several extra with her when she goes out, and gives them away to people who seem to need them.
There is a coming together that is completely unprecedented in our lifetimes.

(6,679 posts)It is interesting how many died in the wool Republican voters in this old timers village are suddenly finding themselves on the side of people over profits when it's their own necks in the balance. On top of that the eternal aggressive driving on the main road has about vanished and the random acts of kindness are either simply going up, or are just being reported more.
Side notes -- I'm sewing masks as well and switched to strings when the elastic ran out. Found out yesterday bungee cords have a bunch of little elastics inside and I have a big fat can full of bungees. Took a bunch to the local Kroger and one of the cashiers cried.
They are on the front lines and overlooked when it comes to the need for PPE.
Also, this family, I think it was meant to be. The Mom and my husband shared the same oncology clinic for nearly 2 years and got to know each other a little that way. Those kids seem to like having multiple Grandmas. Who wouldnt?
PoindexterOglethorpe
(25,855 posts)I have zero sewing skills.
My sister seems to be very happy making masks. She's a quilter, and so has tons of material, like any self-respecting quilter would have.
She did tell me a couple of the specific places she donated them to, although I can't remember exactly what or where they are.
Hospital workers need serious N95 masks. The rest of us should be just fine with ordinary cloth masks for when we go to the grocery store.

(25,855 posts)It helps that not only have I been pretty poor at earlier times in my life, but in recent years I've done volunteer work at a local homeless shelter. I help make and serve meals. I do this with a specific faith group. I don't belong to that particular church -- I don't belong to any church -- but some good friends of mine do, and several years ago asked me if I'd like to volunteer with them. I was delighted. What I actually like best is that many of those with that faith group honestly think I'm a member of their church.
I have, as I said above, been pretty poor earlier in my life. When I was a sophomore in high school I had a Saturday babysitting job, and I invariably spent the money on groceries for my family. To me it was unimaginable that I'd spend the money on myself when we desperately needed the food. There five of us kids. Mom was a nurse, and back then nurses didn't make very much money. She took every extra shift she could get, and it still wasn't enough. I also got much needed dental work thanks to a local Catholic charity, and for years after, when I made donations to the United Way, I always earmarked my donation to that specific charity.
I have never been homeless. Not even all that close. Although I suppose I was in reality the proverbial two missed paychecks away from homelessness. As an adult I always had a steady job, so although my income was limited, I never felt as though my situation was precarious.
Those early experiences shaped me, and because of them I appreciate what I have today.

(65,173 posts)So no action needed. But I wonder if the timeline is still different if she doesnt have to file.
KentuckyWoman
(6,679 posts)I have no taxable income and do not need to file as well. My SS comes direct deposit but since I have not had to file with the IRS they didn't have my info. I had to add, and did so the 2nd day the website was operational.
On the flip side an acquaintance in the same situation found out the IRS had her info on file. We have no idea why one and not the other... but there you have it.
mvd
(65,173 posts)I know the IRS will be implementing a tool to check the status of your deposit/check soon. Could use that.

(25,855 posts)incredibly fast. When I made the OP, I knew the money was there because of the total amount in my available funds. Actually, it was a startlingly large amount of money because my Social Security deposit had also hit at the same time. Within the hour the $1200 was posted, not just showing up in the total of money available in that account.
This is what's so great about electronic banking.
A decade ago I was working at the local hospital. You could get your paycheck by direct deposit, which I did, or by physical paycheck. I was astonished at how many of my co-workers, especially the young ones, wanted a physical paycheck. They'd show up at the hospital around noon, when the paychecks were being distributed, desperate to get it and deposit it. I'd try to convince them that if they did direct deposit, they'd have already had the money, but I don't think they ever understood.

(9,651 posts)I'm on SSDI. Have been for years. I'm so far below poverty level that I have not had to file taxes for many years. SSDI is my only income. SSDI is direct deposited to my bank. So now I'm wondering if I have to fill out the online form, or if the check will eventually show up on its own.
Haha, we ARE talking about Trump's inept government.

(8,574 posts)I'd like to be able to bank it but I have some outstanding medical bills that have to be paid so that will take a good chunk of it, and the rest has to sit because my unemployment checks have not started coming in yet. (31,388 posts)but I have not seen mine hit my account yet.
My taxes for 2019 were already filed and I ended up owing a fair amount. It was an odd year for me as the first year of receiving widow's social security benefits and survivor's benefits on a federal civil service pension. My income from now on will--most likely--never be as high.
So, I may end up not getting the full amount. Or having to wait for it.
It's wonderful that you donated your stimulus money. I plan to do the same thing when--if!--it arrives.

(14,642 posts)Actually, for both of us. I checked last night and its wasn't. Daughter told me yesterday that she already had it, but didnt say when it appeared. Most of ours will pay for our wills.

(9,008 posts)$2400 will help a lot, for now. We are retired and basically living off of our Social Security payments and dividends. So far, two of our holdings have suspended their dividends, and this stimulus amount replaces those lost dividends.
All in all, we are lucky and in a good spot.
