Biden sees himself as a bridge between past and future. His choice of VP will say a lot about what kind of future he wantsOn Jan. 20, 2021, Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. will be 78 years and 61 days old. If he wins in November, hell not only be the oldest man to ever take the oath of office, hell also be the oldest man to ever be president. Ronald Reagan completed his second term just before his 78th birthday.
On Jan. 20, 2025, Biden will be 82 years and 61 days old, older than all but eight presidents when they died.
Theres no indication that Biden is physically unwell. (For the record, if Donald Trump completes a second term, he, too, will become the oldest president in U.S. history and he believes exercise drains your life force.) Last year, the American Federation for Aging Research assessed the health, longevity and survival prospects of presidential candidates. It gave Biden a 79 percent chance of living through his first term and a 70 percent chance of surviving his second. (Trump has an 85 percent chance of making it another four years.)
And contra the memes about Bidens allegedly declining mental state, theres no evidence that hes mentally unwell, either at least beyond innuendo linked to his stutter.

(58,785 posts)I prefer not to imagine undue weight to other characteristics. Including age. The chances that our president and VP would both drop dead while in office, much less in the same month, are not good.
I'm among the many who prioritize experience and competence over everything else. And "contra the memes about Biden's declining mental state," I'm perfectly fine with whoever he decides he wants to be the next Biden to his Obama.

(42,300 posts)I believe Joe would do well to get himself a VP in her 50s, who has governing and legislative experience.
One of the reasons Joe wasn't my first choice was his age. I don't apologize for this as I consider it an issue. However, he is in good health and totally on top of things. I do think that a younger, experienced VP will help assuage people's concerns.

(279 posts)I agree with writer that Warren is the best choice given the circumstances and rebuilding that will need to be done. Thats a lot of power and responsibility - picking who will probably be the next president in four years. Im sure theres a mega team working on it.
