Our good friend Barr has decided to intervene in a religious dispute sparked by fines on a Mississippi Church during a drive-in service (can't these people just get their services livestreamed already? It's 2020), claiming that the city that issued the fine (but now will not collect due to the outrage generated) is a violation of people's religious rights (naturally)

(23,478 posts)Someone asked him that question in today's press conference. He said for the marijuana they are in well spaced lines.
The drive in churches people have their windows open near each other and socialize too closely and stay for hours. It made sense.

(7,512 posts)My local news had a story on it. Basically the pastor instructed people to park their car, keep their windows closed, tune in to a particular FM frequency on their audio system, and honk when instructed. I think I would have gone nuts listening to honking cars if I lived near the church, but at least they weren't spreading the contagion.

(7,520 posts)"Noise parades" seem to be the current way to show support - pot clanging, horn honking. I've heard a couple of caravans of school teachers driving past student houses and honking to visit and support their classes.

(637 posts)They are parking in the parking lot and the pastor is broadcasting the sermon from an empty church. I can't tell if it is actually over the radio or over a loudspeaker in the parking lot. Either way, if they stay in their cars, I don't see a problem. Seems to balance the needs for social distancing and the 1st amendment.
To me is seems the police knocking on windows and issuing tickets has more of a chance of spreading the virus than people sitting in their cars with the windows rolled up. How many people have the police been in contact with? Seems dumb.

Why can't a believer just stay home and talk to his/her god directly?
I've always held that if God were real there would be no need for churches.

(2,227 posts)who have ALSO drank the kool-aid, otherwise the kool-aid starts to wear off... Modern day christianity has nothing to do with humility and worshiping in private. It is ALL ABOUT being seen, testifying, recruiting, HUMILIATING and BULLYING OTHERS.
Don't mind me. I am just a jaded atheist that was raised in a fundamental church...
And drive-in churches have been around for decades. I remember seeing my first in the 80's in Gainesville FL.

(5,308 posts)When you're heavily invested in something emotionally, when you've been indoctrinated early and can't accept that your entire worldview has been false, when you can't sustain something rationally... you have to seek and attend forces of propaganda, red herrings, non sequiturs, emotion, to buttress your philosophy... or experience the traumas of withdrawal and dissonance.

(89,239 posts)they can still collect money. Maybe more so since they would go directly car to car so people might feel a need to give more than they otherwise might have .

(61 posts)We actually have churches in Illinois that are recommending people stop being stupid and stay at home. They also have livestream set up for them for their safety during the covid19. These southern areas are not playing it smart at all.
I do not get why they don't want to get it livestreamed. Maybe they don't know how to set it up? But I'm sure they have enough younger people to figure that out maybe? lol.
Some people are just ignorant and because they themselves have not gotten the virus yet, they feel like they can overpower this virus (maybe with prayers? haha) So ridiculous.
Sounds like they just want their moneys worth.

They also asked for volunteers to talk others through setting up social media accounts and how to watch, etc. I believe they did this a week or so before the order came down. They knew it was going to happen so they prepared their members in advance.
