And the $349 billion for payroll protection, well, 90% of that (could be 90% of $600 billion, but here the better victory is the enemy of the good assist); $600 a week in additional unemployment benefits; increased paid sick leave; augmented eligibility for unemployment; and granting of federal assistance when the state-level benefits run out.

Perhaps he missed those. I'm sure he tried really, really hard, these are obscure things that if you only spent 4-5 hours a day reading the newspapers and watching the news you'd surely miss.

Then there's the sort-of expectation of there being more whenever Congress gets back to DC.

The payments for the other countries on the list are provided as direct payments from the government to individuals and families.

The FMLA expansion, which can include the 10 days of Emergency Leave, or 10 days of unpaid leave, and 74 days of 60% pay, is mandated only if the employer has more than 50 employees. The employer pays the wage and there is a direct offset to the employer portion of the SS tax. FMLA is only for parents who have to care for either sick children (under 18) or who cannot find child care because of a stay at home order (like school closings). The 10 days of emergency leave require a stay at home order by the government (federal or state), or a medical diagnosis of COVID for the employee or a dependent child.

And even the one-time direct payment of the $1200 is to "taxpayers," not families.

That's closer to the kind of help cash-strapped 3rd-world countries are offering their people.

Except this is America - a land where billionaires are having 100-story apartment buildings built in Manhattan just so they can buy the top floors.
