General Discussion

1) He is not a medical doctor. He has a PhD in clinical psychology from the University of North Texas.
2) BUT, he is no longer licensed to practice in any state.
3) Why? Well...
In1988, the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists determined that he had hired a former patient, without "proper separation between termination of therapy and the initiation of employment."
4) But wait, there's more.
The patient also made claims of inappropriate contact initiated by Dr. Phil. This was kind of dropped from the case, but it's, you know, -interesting to note.-
5) He was brought up on ethics charges for having an inappropriate non-physical relationship with a patient in 1989...
6) and in 2008 for practicing psychology without a professional license or certification
7) and also for violating doctor-patient confidentiality regarding Britney Spears.
8) He surrendered his Texas license in 2006, and has never held a license to practice psychology in any other state since.
9) Despite not being a medical doctor, he started selling weight loss shakes in 2003. The name of the shakes was "Shape It Up, Woo, Woo!"
10) Because it's illegal to practice psychology without a license (sorry, Lucy from Peanuts) his TV guests have to sign paperwork saying they are only receiving "advice."
11) In other words: He's an entertainer. Maybe even a skilled one! But he's not a doctor. He's not even a licensed psychologist anymore. He's DEFINITELY not an epidemiologist.
12) In conclusion, Lucy from Peanuts is probably a better authority on viruses right now.
Good night.

(18,672 posts)My aunt used to rave about him and sent me his book many years ago. I read a few pages and tossed it. Hes not only a junk science quack, hes a ghoul preying upon and using vulnerable people to rake in fame and fortune for himself. Oprah has a lot to answer for by thrusting quack charlatans upon our society like Oz and Phil.

(47,413 posts)He was always an obvious fraud as a psychologist. He was just an entertainer, who used people and their problems to boost his ratings and sell his books. A con artist, a grifter, a modern day snake oil salesman, who did more harm than good. I'm surprised he is still on the air.

(8,812 posts)That statement alone qualifies him for a top position in the Trump Administration.....
You really have to wonder about the intelligence of a person that spouts statements that are purely ludicrous....
But then, that sums up the entire bunch of RepubliCONS, and Trump, doesn't it........
They learned that they can say anything and their followers will believe it. Truth and facts don't matter.

(2,690 posts)I don't think very much of her or any of her woo-woo bullshit. But I don't think she's a grifter. I think, sadly, she believes the stuff she says.
Of course I could be wrong because, aside from a couple of glimpses of her performance in the Democratic debates, I have not looked too deeply into her activities.

(2,690 posts)But that's because she comes across as level headed and rational, lucid, if you will, much of the time.
I don't remember exactly the things she said in the debates, but I recall her appealing to morality and decency a couple of times in ways the real politicians on stage knew were true but anti-political. And she did win some applause for some of the things she said, as I recall.

(13,494 posts)never cared for either of them and dont know why Oprah had them on her show. While Dr. Oz is a real doctor, I really think some of the things he says and pushes are questionable. Phil has never been a doctor and should be ignored. Have never watched their shows, but have seen commercials. Phils show look ridiculous in particular. By the way, if Dr. Oz practice was so great, why does he have time for a tv show?

Watched it in all its permutations. King was originally slated for the second, soft - dare I say Oprhazied? - hour.
And then she was moved to both hours, delegated mostly to African American interviews and topics.
And then she interviewed some rapper wrapper? and she won. Is now the first name on the marquee.
OK. Perhaps this is what everyone likes. These days we sleep late so by the time we get up and open, yes, CBS morning show, it is almost over.
CBS is still better than the ABC and NBC morning shows, to my taste.
A long answer to a simple question..

However, in 1997 he formed his own board, called the National Ophthalmology Board, with 200 other physicians in protest of certification requirement changes by the American Board of Ophthalmologists. The now-defunct board was not recognized by the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure, so Dr. Paul was not board certified by a board recognized by the state since 2005, and since Dr. Paul's board dissolved in 2011, he has had no certification from an active body, according to the Washington Post. Kentucky state law does not require board certification for licensure. ....

(1,366 posts)Psychologists are PhDs. Thats what they are. Thats not a defense of this guy, but the idea that he is somehow a phony psychologist because he is not an MD is wrong. He is entitled to the honorific. Nor is that connected to the license.
Now that gives him no credentials to talk about the virus or anything like medical such as that.
And he seems to be an extremely shady character and that doesnt seem to be new. His life over the last 30 years seems to be built on the huckster model.
hlthe2b
(102,231 posts)The fact is he's not even a licensed, practicing psychologist. He has been stripped of his license for unprofessional behavior.
Perhaps you are sensitive because you or someone you know holds a Ph.D. who should both be respected for their knowledge within their field and their accomplishments. No doubt. But when they stray into areas for which they hold NO expertise nor knowledge and do not make clear they are expressing a personal uninformed opinion only--they deserve every bit of condemnation we can deliver.
And no, those who have had their license pulled for misbehavior/unprofessional behavior no longer are deserving of the honorific.

(2,375 posts)In 1995, Oprah Winfrey hired McGraw's legal consulting firm CSI to prepare her for the Amarillo Texas beef trial. Winfrey was so impressed with McGraw that she thanked him for her victory in that case, which ended in 1998. Soon after, she invited him to appear on her show. After helping her win the case in 1998, Dr. Phil became a regular expert on Oprah, dealing with life strategies and relationships. Currently in its 17th season, Dr. Phil took the mantle of highest-rated daytime talk show from The Oprah Winfrey Show where McGraw first made his mark before headlining his own talker. He makes $80 million a year.
