Hi, I'm gonna tell you some stuff about Dr. Phil and save you a trip to Wikipedia.

1) He is not a medical doctor. He has a PhD in clinical psychology from the University of North Texas.

2) BUT, he is no longer licensed to practice in any state.

3) Why? Well...

In1988, the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists determined that he had hired a former patient, without "proper separation between termination of therapy and the initiation of employment."

4) But wait, there's more.

The patient also made claims of inappropriate contact initiated by Dr. Phil. This was kind of dropped from the case, but it's, you know, -interesting to note.-

5) He was brought up on ethics charges for having an inappropriate non-physical relationship with a patient in 1989...

6) and in 2008 for practicing psychology without a professional license or certification

7) and also for violating doctor-patient confidentiality regarding Britney Spears.

8) He surrendered his Texas license in 2006, and has never held a license to practice psychology in any other state since.

9) Despite not being a medical doctor, he started selling weight loss shakes in 2003. The name of the shakes was "Shape It Up, Woo, Woo!"

10) Because it's illegal to practice psychology without a license (sorry, Lucy from Peanuts) his TV guests have to sign paperwork saying they are only receiving "advice."

11) In other words: He's an entertainer. Maybe even a skilled one! But he's not a doctor. He's not even a licensed psychologist anymore. He's DEFINITELY not an epidemiologist.

12) In conclusion, Lucy from Peanuts is probably a better authority on viruses right now.

Good night.

I don't remember exactly the things she said in the debates, but I recall her appealing to morality and decency a couple of times in ways the real politicians on stage knew were true but anti-political. And she did win some applause for some of the things she said, as I recall.

I think.

With Harry Smith and Kathleen Sullivan.

Watched it in all its permutations. King was originally slated for the second, soft - dare I say Oprhazied? - hour.

And then she was moved to both hours, delegated mostly to African American interviews and topics.

And then she interviewed some rapper wrapper? and she won. Is now the first name on the marquee.

OK. Perhaps this is what everyone likes. These days we sleep late so by the time we get up and open, yes, CBS morning show, it is almost over.

CBS is still better than the ABC and NBC morning shows, to my taste.

A long answer to a simple question..

Psychologists are PhDs. That’s what they are. That’s not a defense of this guy, but the idea that he is somehow a phony psychologist because he is not an MD is wrong. He is entitled to the honorific. Nor is that connected to the license.

Now that gives him no credentials to talk about the virus or anything like medical such as that.

And he seems to be an extremely shady character — and that doesn’t seem to be new. His life over the last 30 years seems to be built on the huckster model.

or at least a content expert in these segments. Not an epidemiologist, virologist, immunologist--many who are world-renowned PhDs and not MDs. That is SOOOO not the point.

The fact is he's not even a licensed, practicing psychologist. He has been stripped of his license for unprofessional behavior.

Perhaps you are sensitive because you or someone you know holds a Ph.D. who should both be respected for their knowledge within their field and their accomplishments. No doubt. But when they stray into areas for which they hold NO expertise nor knowledge and do not make clear they are expressing a personal uninformed opinion only--they deserve every bit of condemnation we can deliver.

And no, those who have had their license pulled for misbehavior/unprofessional behavior no longer are deserving of the honorific.

In 1995, Oprah Winfrey hired McGraw's legal consulting firm CSI to prepare her for the Amarillo Texas beef trial. Winfrey was so impressed with McGraw that she thanked him for her victory in that case, which ended in 1998. Soon after, she invited him to appear on her show. After helping her win the case in 1998, Dr. Phil became a regular expert on Oprah, dealing with life strategies and relationships. Currently in its 17th season, Dr. Phil took the mantle of highest-rated daytime talk show from The Oprah Winfrey Show where McGraw first made his mark before headlining his own talker. He makes $80 million a year.
