Land O'Lakes bids farewell to the American Indian woman's illustration that adorned its packaging since 1928. The image of a non-specific American Indian with a feather in her hair kneeling will be replaced by ... lands and lakes, with the phrase "Farmer-Owned" above the brandmark and "Since 1921" below.
North Dakota Rep. Ruth Buffalo said of the previous Land O'Lakes logo went "hand-in-hand with human and sex trafficking of our women and girls ... by depicting Native women as sex objects," per The Grand Forks Tribune. Land O'Lakes joins a growing group of organizations and schools that have opted to drop American Indian mascots or symbols.
"As Land O'Lakes looks toward our 100th anniversary, we've recognized we need packaging that reflects the foundation and heart of our company culture and nothing does that better than our farmer-owners whose milk is used to produce Land O'Lakes' dairy products," said Beth Ford, president and CEO of Land OLakes, in a statement.
In 2005, the American Psychological Association called for the immediate retirement of all American Indian mascots, symbols, images and personalities by schools, colleges, universities, athletic teams and organizations. The organization based its position 15 years ago on the body of social science literature that shows the harmful effects of racial stereotyping and inaccurate racial portrayals.

(40,190 posts)They make an excellent product. The new packaging is now out. I have long wondered what was taking them so long to retire the image.

(22,911 posts)I enjoyed the throw back style art of the original logo as a classic art form, not the specific content necessarily, but the style. If it had been a figure of Danial Boon or Lady Liberty instead I would miss it just the same. But it is the right move to make.

(63,893 posts)football games...it was awful, some guy in make up and "Indian" costume would come out on the field doing a war whoop. Really bad and embarrassing.

(8,052 posts)the packaging. I appreciate vintage/nostalgic logos and advertising. Edit to add: I tried Kerrygold because they were out of LandOLakes butter at WalMart--I can't really taste the difference, not sure why people rave over it.

(4,316 posts)Its a great move, said Adrienne Keene, a professor at Brown University, author of the popular Native Appropriations blog and citizen of the Cherokee Nation. It makes me really happy to think that theres now going to be an entire generation of folks that are growing up without having to see that every time they walk in the grocery store.
