5%. (number of deaths, +- 36,000 divided by cases, +- 685,000). I think the 5% is artificially high because we only test 1% of the population. If someone would point out to Trump that he could reduce the death rate by testing more people we could have universal testing very soon and bigly.

(12,964 posts)So indeed there are lots of unknown cases, but also unknown deaths. So there is an error factor in the data. A better approximation will be available when we can see the difference in the expected 'normal' mortality rate vs the 'covid-era' mortality rate, which will also include people who died because of covid-era triage rules but not directly from covid.
I think what we do know is that if you get tested and you are positive, you are in the set of people who are experiencing somewhere between 1-5% mortality.

(50,237 posts)time span, NYC lost 30,000 people from the Spanish flu. In 2 months, NYC has lost 15,000 people to Covid 19. And that's probably a low number because of lack of testing. I doubt the morgue has time or resources to test every corpse that comes through the door. As for Trump . . . stable genius that he is, he'd never be able to figure out what you're talking about.
