Believe me, I know ALL about DeWine. My wife used to work for him when he was Attorney General. I'm actually shocked he broke ranks with Trump on ANY issue, let alone this one. But I believe in giving credit where it's due. So write this one down, because it's the first, and probably the LAST, time I'll ever give that guy credit for anything.

(38,410 posts)He's been faster on the shut down than any other governor, especially if you count actions taken from the first in-state diagnosis. The health care impact of Covid 19 in Ohio has barely been a ripple because of his prompt action. A number of people challenged me as to specific states so I have done a fair amount of fact-checking on the dates of key actions (declaration of the state of emergency, closure of secondary and primary schools, bans on large gatherings, closure of bars and restaurants, etc.)
Here are the recent predictions, based on the effectiveness of the intervention - https://coronavirus.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/covid-19/dashboards/forecast-model/
And, aside from being the absolute first on some things (shutting elementary schools) and being the relative first (time from first in-state case to action) on many more, he hired Dr. Acton (an Obama organizer) to run the health department specifically because he wanted to make fact-based decisions. (Not to mention that the wonderful ASL interpreter is a lesbian). So he's playing nicely across the aisle - and deferring to Acton on all things science.
We should do the same when the situation merits it.
(No, I won't be voting for him if he runs again - and no, I don't agree with him on anything else. But in this instance he has put people ahead of politics.)

(38,410 posts)Will it make Trump change? No
Will it put Ohio on Trump's shit list? Yes
So the net outcome is that there would be one more state Trump is mad at (and withholding things from), and NY would not be having their N95 masks cleaned using the new Batelle process for cleaning masks up to 20 times (the approval for which was initially denied - and only obtained because DeWine got pissed and called Trump up - and because had deliberately avoided calling Trump an idiot, Trump took his call.
So we all benefit because Ohio's numbers are staying down - and NY (and other locales) have access to a cleaning process that would not have been approved had DeWine taken the invtation that reporters throw at him daily to trash Trump.
Would it be satisfing? Absolutely. But ultimately it would cost lives.
Is it fair that Trump takes DeWine's calls and not those from the governors of Michigan and New York? Absolutely not. But would it gain anything at all for DeWine to add his name to those in the doghouse - no. More people nationwide would have lost their lives - and certainly more Ohioans.
Once we're out of the crisis, will I have a different attitude about whether DeWine has an obligation to speak up - absolutely.
But for now, I have been impressed with his political savvy and patience in holding his tongue, since his actions clearly demonstrate he has very differnt priorities than Trump on this issue.

(38,410 posts)Saving lives or trashing Trump?
I've got a very clear answer to that, and it isn't trashing Trump.
I think DeWine is doing a pretty good job, by his actions that very clearly say (1) he doesn't agree with Trump and (2) he is working across the aisle with democratic governors from Michigan and Kentucky, at the very least.
Insisting that he's not doing enough right now to disagree with Trump makes it partisan politics, because it elevates political goals (getting Trump out of the white house) over people's lives (which Acton/DeWine have already saved by utilizing that relationship not just for Ohio, but for the other states that benefit from the leverage DeWine is able to assert).

(38,410 posts)Trump does not have the emotional maturity to restrain from actively sabotaging anyone who expressly opposes him.
So the ONLY thing DeWine trashing him right now would accomplish would be that he would be unable to do things like he did a couple of weeks ago. The fact that Trump was not boycotting him saved lives not only in Ohio, but also in New York - and any place else that is currently having their N95 masks being cleaned with the Battelle technology. Had he trashed Trump, Trump would not have taken his call - and Battelle would not have FDA approval to clean masks up to 20 times.
There is no controlling or changing Trump. All of the Republican condemnation in the world will make absolutely no difference to him - except to give him more targets for his childish tantrums.

He's a bumbling idiot at times, but he's been pretty aggressive on closing schools, issuing a stay at home, etc while confirmed cases in the state were very low. I hear he's just issued an order that every resident and worker in a nursing home be tested. Whoever he's listening to is putting good info in his ear. Hopefully he sticks to it and doesn't cave to pressure.

(2,273 posts)Not a fan of anything else hes done, but I will give him just props here. He was an early advocate for a statewide non essential business shutdown, and social distancing procedures. Also, hes using the 5:00 news slot to broadcast a daily briefing which is, again to give him credit, less about him than it is about procedures being put in place and reports from local medical and response folks.
He was proactive early, and hes legitimately trying to put factual information out there as near as I can tell. So hes doing his job.

(10,264 posts)with respect to the virus ONLY. He signed some truly awful bills late in the session, was a bit late in locking down but this week's extension of the lockdown surprised me.
I'm guessing he was pretty much bucking the desires of his business/ag supporters and would give him a passing grade. I can't imagine his predecessor, Butch Otter being able to hold a candle to him.

(12,011 posts)He's been doing a pretty good job managing the coronavirus in his state, from what I've heard, and he's been willing to be a bit critical of Trump at times, though obviously muted compared to some of the Democrats.
There are several other Republican governors who have at least imposed some form of stay at home order, including a few who recently extended them. From what I can tell the governors in Idaho, West Virginia, Indiana, and a few other states have done a not terrible job with this, and have faced some opposition from their own party with their restrictions.

(34,031 posts)Shoot me!! LOL
He has some questionable Trump rhetoric out there, but his roar is worse than his bite. (Then there is Dan Patrick with his OTT stuff) Abbott has coordinated well with local authorities etc. He's actually more measured in his press conferences. I do watch his press conferences and don't feel like whirling bricks at the TV.
He kept talking about "Opening Texas" for the last week and it made me all nervous, but instead cancelled school for the rest of the year...allowed closed nonessential business to operate as curbside. (We already have few that do) I think this will allow the head shops to do curbside..LOL...Personally, I would like to see some resources used so more places can operate curbside. (He didn't say anything about that though...so I don't know) Non-elective medical procedures can be started. (We have enough hospital beds) Nursing home employees are not allowed to work at any other facility etc.

(8,210 posts)Then I went to the link to read what they're actually doing and it sounds reasonable to me.
If restaurants can do curbside business, let's allow other retailers to do the same.
Once some of the noise subsides, I suspect Texas will claim, "First to open!!!"
The rhetorical messaging will make its way to faux news, which, I'm sure, was a driving force.
But the reality seems pretty rational to me.
