He was totally unprepared to refute the one-eyed repuke guest he invited. Then he spent his New Rules segment trotting out the argument that so many other things kill us we shouldn't be overreacting to the coronavirus.
Maher has always been a smug prick, sometimes funny and occasionally spot-on. But all too often he lets his RW guests run roughshod over him because he's too busy getting high to do his homework for effective counter arguments against so much of the BS he essentially lets go unchallenged, just saying OK before moving to the next talking point that gets shot down.
Fuck him. I've got better choices for information and entertainment.

(31,384 posts)I'm glad I didn't see the New Rules segment. I don't agree with him all the time, but he can be pretty funny on occasion.
How people can be so stupid that they don't understand the difference between flu deaths, car accidents, drownings, etc, which all never run the risk of overwhelming the health care system and a pandemic that results in killing the health care workers is beyond me. Maybe I get it because my professional life was spent as a hospital administrator.
We've had 37,000 deaths in one month! And if people disregard stay at home rules to run out and gather in groups and get face to face with each other, it's going to turn ugly really fast with multiple cities and states being overwhelmed with critical/hospitalized coronavirus cases.
I mean, when have you ever seen refrigerated trailer trucks backed up to hospitals to store the dead from flu, car accidents, and drownings?

(3,974 posts)and never has been. Sure he agrees with us on many issues but. He is a bigot and a racist. He gives a platform to right wing liars and doesnt call them out on their lies. He will also parrot GOP talking points to attack Democrats.

(81,475 posts)Indeed, he was actually kissing Crenshaws ass and even begged for Crenshaws approval of his (Mahers) credibility with conservatives. But the monologue and especially new rules can be frequently very funny and on target.

(7,413 posts)I canceled HBO after Game of Thrones but catch him on YT here and there. John Oliver is pretty good as well.
I do agree that the media is engaging in Panic Porn on the pandemic, despite it being as serious as it is.
There was a lady here in Charlotte who got infected despite being totally quarantined. The media were breaking down her door trying to get the scoop.

I'm surprised the media hasn't focused on the horrors of lung transplantation due to respiratory viruses yet. One of them will connect the dots and the rest will follow suit. Can't wait.

(13,787 posts)I get that the show is on HBO and the language can be vile, but he uses vile language in almost every sentence. To me that is not comic, that makes him an overbearing cussing loudmouth! I know he wont clean it, so I quit watching that filth long ago!

(320 posts)THAT is ludicrous. He does NOT use vile language in almost every sentence.

(320 posts)You are making a mistake in blowing off Bill Maher. The reason that he is able to get
people, including conservatives, to come on his show is that, while he does ask some hard questions, he doesn't attack them. I think it is important to listen to people like the Repuke guest. This guy is immensely dangerous because he is a brilliant debater. Of course, his defense of the Republican's intense efforts to interfere with people voting, a defense that included saying "that's what they always say," was an absolute lie and I agree that Maher should have been able to point out that numbers of Republicans had not only admitted to that but bragged about it. While Crenshaw can debate very well, it might have been difficult for him to rebut Maher pointing that out. Sadly, he didn't. I do agree that he seemed weak in his discussion with Crenshaw. His show is not up to what it is with live guests present but it is still an entertaining hour.
Dem4Life1102
(3,974 posts)but he doesnt have to let them lie with impunity either. And he doesnt have to parrot GOP talking points to attack Democrats.

(12,864 posts)What I object to is a host who is so over matched by such guests that he essentially provides a platform for their BS because Bill so often misses obvious points of fact and logic to refute the BS. One does not have to "attack" a guest to expose the flaws and falsehoods in their arguments.
I'm at the point where frustration and aggravation with Mr. Maher far outweighs what his guests and his humor have to offer.
I'm done with him.

Lets not act like them.

(11,302 posts)I've always been uncomfortable with the idea that we should mirror (or exceed?) our enemies. And I'm dismayed that certain people in our camp seem more than comfortable with climbing into the cesspool. "We go low .." May I also point out that I don't see where this man received his disfigurement is particularly relevant? So .. if he had been injured in an auto accident, or in a childhood prank .. then it would be OK to mock his impairment? Likewise .. (IMO) serving in uniform then does not armor or inure someone from otherwise being a total sh*theel or lower form of life .. for the remainder of their span here on earth. With respect.

(28,254 posts)Maher became an insufferable, liberal-bashing, right-wing-pandering jerk to me several years ago, and I haven't regretted giving up him and his sorry show one bit.
The rest of you need to quit contributing to Maher's ratings. He is no longer worthy of Democratic support.

(1,098 posts)I have never liked liberal comedians trying to make fun of all politics. The life of people are being affected by policies and laws. People are dying because they can't get or afford health care, the poor are going hungry and homeless people suffer. There is nothing funny about any of this.
Sophia_Of_PlanetX
(73 posts)The fake crowd laugher is really annoying and awkward. John Olivers show, on the other hand, really hasnt suffered at all.
TBH, I think his show would be much better if he had a conference meeting (like Web-Ex or Zoom) with the main guest, and then later a panel of three guests. Then, have the last guest join late. He could replicate his show with conference video software.
The current format really needs work.

(31,233 posts)be on. What a mistake that was. Bill is continuing the myth that Joe Biden is senile. He, obviously, was a big BS supporter, and was disappointed with the inevitable outcome of the Democratic primaries. This proved to me that Maher is just as big an a**hole as he ever was.

(4,395 posts)I've been saying for years, if you're going to invite white supremacists like Milo Yiannopolous on your show on the principal of free speech you have a moral obligation to win the argument on air. Otherwise you're just providing a platform for hate.
I'll tune in occasionally if someone posts a monologue or new rules that is particularly good but I can't remember the last time I sat through a whole episode.
Bill is just a provocateur who isn't anywhere near as smart as he thinks he is and that's a dangerous ally to have.
