Question for those in Michigan about the stay at home order

Hello all,
My Trumper SIL and my husband got into a tiff last night and she hung up on him. The topic: the "extreme" stay at home orders. Things she sited:
1. Can buy groceries at Target but nothing else such as clothes or laundry baskets. Groceries only.
2. Can't use a motor boat but paddle/oars are ok
3. Can't but paint or fertilizer (heard that from a protester too).

We are in IL where our governor gave us much more freedom than that but we still observe the rules. Granted, my SIL lives on an island if of Detroit so with her $$$$ it's always been about her, no empathy at all.

So those in Michigan, please tell us what the rules really are and if they are so strict, why so.

To all -- stay safe, stay safe.

Paula

Can I go out in my boat?

That largely depends on whether your boat has a motor. “Physical outdoor activity like kayaking, canoeing and sailing is permitted under the order, but using a motorboat, a jet ski, or other similar watercraft is not,” the governor’s office says.

That seems a bit daft. Going fishing with a bass boat seems it would be reasonable

Then as said before there’s the gas station...those handles are a germ magnet. Then it’s the “oh, let’s get some worms” or “drat forgot I needed line” or “let’s stop and get some snacks”.

I live in rural Michigan “up north”, in our town the hardware stores voluntarily closed because those people that have cabins or summer homes up here and live in the southern hotspots came anyway, they went into the stores with the whole family to shop for things to brighten up the cabin. The hardware store had a huge sign telling people to just get what they NEEDED to no avail.
Now locals have to call the store tell them what we need and they will decide if it’s necessary or not.

Lawn work, motor boats and painting all require trips to the store or to buy gas.

Gov Whitmer is just heading the experts advice about how to flatten the curve. It seems to be working.

If people just hang on for a few more months, we may be able to get things moving by summer. Tourism in summer is a big part of the state's economy.

It's funny to me that all the people are bitching about not being able to do yard work. Temperatures were below freezing each night this week and it snowed about 5 inches yesterday.

It didn’t snow in northern Michigan by me. Creating a larger garden compound got a lot of work done yesterday. Sunny but windy today still working outside.

#2 is correct. Big retailers big box stores had to close nursery and garden centers. Seed stores and smaller businesses can still sell fertilizer. Areas like paint centers in big box stores where families come and hang out whilst trying to decide then have to have staff help them have been closed also. My SIL works at Menards he said that certain areas are magnets for loungers and groups and that is why. I don't believe you can't buy clothes. Another one they like is baby seats. They are available.

nothing about motor boats.

Ok to leave home to secure "products necessary for the safety, sanitation, and basic
operation of their residences"

For instance, I just called my local hardware store, which is open, and
I'm going over to pick up some lawn and leaf bags, certainly showing a
pretty broad interpretation of "necessary" products.

I'm sure if I wanted paint they'd sell it to me.

I'll be doing a garden this year, have just ordered seeds so I don't have
to pick up seedlings at a garden center - something I've been meaning
to do for years anyway.

cops aren't checking on what anybody is out and about doing - they
have better things to do.

Don't believe the bullshit.

The necessities are open here in MI. The governor took stronger measures because we were disproportionately higher in cases.

I will be emailing my governor today asking her to call out the National Guard next time these gun humping deplorables pull a stunt like this.

This one got crucified by his local newspaper.

I picked up seeds for the garden a few days ago and my FIL bought some paint at the local hardware store. I can do pretty much everything I want to do.

My wife and I were just saying that if someone was observing us over the past couple of months, they probably couldn't tell that Michigan had a Stay at Home order in effect.

So my life has changed. Only go out when we have to. our garbage disposal site has closed so as temps rise it may get smelly. Drew down our freezer for first 30 days. Extra precautions of course. Do miss going out to eat but not a hardship. Some of the 10 dead in county we knew. So your mileage may vary even in the same state.

I did the shopping before and the only real change there is that I get to the store when it first opens in the morning and I wear a mask. We can keep ourselves busy at home doing projects as we already had much of the materials on hand to do them.

14. there are good reasons for all of those
Sat Apr 18, 2020, 01:45 PM

1.) Big box stores were restricted to selling essential items like groceries. I don't think all states have done this, but I also don't think Michigan is alone in that. Stores that just sell, say, garden gnomes aren't allowed to stay open, so why should target be allowed to sell garden gnomes when stores have enough trouble dealing with the crowds there to buy groceries, restocking shelves, etc.? Old Navy isnt' open either. Because new clothes aren't essential. You can still buy clothes online, of course, so protesting that is ridiculous.

2.) Motorboats generally require more social contact and/or use of resources than a canoe. Theoretically, this might be a minimally unfair restriction if you live on a lake and have a motorboat tied to your dock that you can't use (until the oars you order online come in, of course), while meanwhile your neighbor is all out enjoying the lake in their paddle canoe. But oh well. The majority of motorboaters would have to make a non-essential trip to the lake and then there is a higher potential for social interaction at the launch, etc.

3.) Again, it's essential products versus non-essential when it comes to physically shopping in brick and mortar stores. But I'm pretty sure you can still get these things delivered from places like Home Depot.

Was in Target and Walmart yesterday, people were just carrying on about as usual. Only really unusual thing was more people wearing masks but many more simply didn't care.

and a lot of the "restrictions" are bullshit being pumped up on social media by Russian trolls to anger MAGAts (which are about as easy to anger as a starving lion). For instance Governor Whitmer had to say MULTIPLE times this week that a internet troll start rumor that you could not buy CAR SEATS for children because of her order was a LIE.

There are probably some things that on the surface maybe go a bit too far? But Whitmer had little time and ZERO support from the Federal government in coming up with the scope of these orders so the decisions had to be made quickly, and when not going too far can mean death, you go too far. It is temporary, a little less than two months if she eases restrictions in early May. NO ONE is going to SUFFER because they couldn't go fishing for a few extra weeks in a motorboat. and as others have said activities that seem to naturally be socially distant, like motorboating to fish, can actually find you interacting in many places. So if it isn't essential to health, it doesn't need to happen.

Michigan actually had to close a place called sleeping bear dunes which is a HUGE outdoor walking area, because people were out there walking around in groups and not distancing themselves. It was a place Whitmer THOUGHT would be save to leave open, and irresponsible people proved her wrong even on THAT.

Everything you said makes sense. And thank for for your perspectives. As a life long Illinoisan/Chicagoan, it's interesting to see the impact of these shutdowns on different areas of the country. Thank you for sharing.

As long as I have known her (34 years), my SIL has always been about her -- her $$$$ (rich lawyer husband) always gave her a sense of entitlement. And now that I know a lot more about narcissists (got burned by "a friend" that turned out to be NPD diagnosed), I know more about true narcissism, which is a spectrum but which she and the orange vulgar yam pResident both display. But that's for another post.
