Jacksonville, FL Beachgoers Don't seem at all concerned with the number of coronavirus deaths and cases on the rise ... because they hit the sand Friday and packed in like sardines. It's a crazy sight, as the sun worshipers took their chances by getting in close contact with other beachgoers.
President Trump is clearly encouraging people to break quarantine, with Tweets like, "LIBERATE MICHIGAN," "LIBERATE VIRGINIA," and "LIBERATE MINNESOTA." He's clearly dog-whistling, because he threw in this ... "And save your great 2nd Amendment."
Not hard to read between the lines ... he's telling his stalwarts to ignore the advice of doctors, scientists, their governor and mayor, because they're Americans dammit. Florida currently has 24,066 confirmed coronavirus cases and 726 deaths ... and counting.
Jacksonville's mayor, Lenny Curry, celebrated the trek to the beach saying, "This can be the beginning of the pathway back to normal life."

Are they going to get the hospitals ready and fully supplied for the new influx? Probably not.

(16,063 posts)But, anyone exposed to the virus will get sick to some degree. It may be just a scratchy throat or days in the ICU.
Immunity implies having antibodies to fight off an infection. No one had that at first. That's what the Novel means.

But for the purists that want social distancing to mean "not if your having any fun" and want to be outraged. Hey .. have at it!

Do you live in Florida? I do, inland on the west coast. My sister is in a beach community on the East Coast south of Jacksonville.
The hospitals here are not prepared for this. How many people got infected there today? How many are bringing it home to their loved ones, the grocery workers (if they are stupid enough to go to the beach, you can bet they are going to the grocery store, hardware store, gas station, etc. not wearing any protective equipment and not washing their hands).
I'd rather spend some time not having "fun" and being alive to attend my son's wedding next year.

(10,053 posts)Down here in South FL (where it's blue) we are sheltering in place on lockdown during the day and on curfew at night. And up north in the red counties they want to open up the beaches? Seriously, these guys are gonna get us all killed...

The best you get is a small increase in the death toll in the late 3/20s, but it's a small bump after a dip, so it might be a real bump or just displaced reporting of deaths. The bump, however, flattened almost at once. The "blood bath" didn't happen.
Same for spreading the SARS-CoV-2 virus nationwide. You can trace individual cases back to spring break, but making the claim that they had any significant effect in other areas is a stretch. We can point to some stories with a total of perhaps 50 people in them, usually groups that travelled together, hung out together, and travelled back together. In some cases, because of the timeline, almost certainly with at least one of the group infected prior to break. Overall, small potatoes. Useful more for confirming a bias than making a convincing argument.
We need to blame spring break, though, or somebody, for the Miami area's infection rate and death toll. And spring break's a convenient excuse.
Places with active spring-breaking other than Miami didn't show much of an increase. Perhaps 5-6 more deaths than expected, if that much. And Miami's death toll, much less than the prophets of doom predicted, can be accounted for by most of the causes for other metroplexes. In other words, delete spring break and you probably wouldn't see much of a difference. Otherwise you have to argue that spring break in Miami was special, and the other factors that slammed other large cities didn't apply there--two special pleadings to account for what no special pleading would accomplish.
I consider the spring-break bloodbath prediction failed. Other predictions about impending disaster might turn out to be true. Or just wishful thinking on the part of some. But I don't forget the predictions or assume that since nobody said they failed that they were accurate. People tend not to point out failed predictions; and people tend to forget that teammates made predictions that failed.
