It's almost as if they don't realize that the narrative in their own heads is not the narrative in everyone else's head. So a typical "conversation" with one of them might go like this:
Friend: "Hi. I wanted to bring those things over, so if you see them, could you let them know?"
Me: "Them?"
Friend: "Yeah. Any time is fine."
Me: "I mean, who?"
Friend: "Who, who?"
Me: "Who are we talking about?"
Friend: "All of them!"
Me: "No. Which people? What are their names?"
Friend: "Oh! Judy. And her family."
Me: "Which Judy?"
Friend: "The same one!"
Me: * SIGH * "Judy Lancaster, Judy Garcia, or Judy Chong?"
Friend: "Judy Chong?"
Me: "Okay, Judy Chong."
Friend: "Who's Judy Chong?"
Me: "She... I... it... IT DOESN'T MATTER! Which Judy?"
Friend: "Oh! Judy Lancaster."
Me: "Okay. And what things?"
Friend: "All of them, really. It's just time to get rid of them, and Arnold could really use most of them. I told Cordelia not to bother, because of what happened with the cousins, so it's just a matter of loading up the truck and hauling them away."
Me: "Who?"
Friend: "I really don't care at this point."
Me: "WHOSE TRUCK? WHAT THINGS?"
Friend: "Rupert's truck! Who else? And you don't have to get testy!"
Me: * INHALE, EXHALE * "Who. is. Rupert?"
Friend: "I told you, Cordelia's cousin! He'll be here right after the party!"
Me: "PARTY?!"
Friend: "Don't shout! It's supposed to be a secret!"
Me: "From who?!"
Friend: "From 'whom'."
Me: * INHALE, EXHALE... INHALE, EXHALE... *
And I still don't know what things we're talking about.
Go figure.
