People suddenly aren't dying, there are people who will respond with "We didn't need Public Health Program X at all! Let's end it!"

(24,653 posts)Not too far into it, but already fascinated because of the immediate relevance with the pandemic.
One of the things he talks about in the prologue is the unknown hero. People who prevent something from happening are never lauded as heroes because we can never know (and often they don't know themselves) that they prevented anything because it never happened.

(24,653 posts)When the worst case scenario doesn't come to pass, people lacking critical thinking skills will assume it was all for nothing. Not able to appreciate that's precisely the damn point.

Government proposals? Not in the least.
Even where you see people calling for opening restaurants, read beyond the headlines. The calls almost always include a requirement for social distancing, even if that means every other table is kept empty.
And if you run into calls for opening restaurants that don't, it doesn't mean much for what the others say.
