(38,634 posts)But when I moved from east of the center of the country (along Highway 30 from NY to CA), 2/3 of the way to the east coast, I discovered that a significant portion of highly educated US residents (they were attending Oberlin College) belived that Ohio was at most one state east of California, and definitely west of the center of the country. Similarly, people from the west coast believed Ohio was no more than one state from the east coast.

(38,634 posts)PA is one long state, and doesn't have an Atalantic coastline. (Fronting on the Delaware River doesn't really count, not to mention, it's got most of NJ between it and the ocean.)

(11,222 posts)understand, they cannot place all our states either, a lot that are the size of their countries. And i am good with that. I have google whenever i need to know where and what is happening with another country in this world.
Interesting and fun.

(63,221 posts)hear it from smug Europeans how bad we are at geography (ok, well a lot of Americans are, but not all of us) when this is how they label our states. He should have at least been able to peg New York!

(39,651 posts)it's better than my knowledge of German geography.
I didn't realize we had so many states named Kansas (thank goodness we don't) and Ohio.
