Former President Barack Obama seems "very eager" to help ex-Vice President Joe Biden defeat President Trump.
Obama insiders reportedly expect the former president to campaign for Biden during the remainder of 2020, though he previously did not have confidence in the former vice president's ability to win the election.
He is very eager to do this, a former senior Obama official told the New York Post. "I certainly expect President Obama to be very active.
Sources continued to say that Trump's presidency has left Obama "heartbroken," listing the federal government's response to the coronavirus pandemic as a reason for a change in leadership. The coronavirus disaster and the [federal] governments inability to lead on it is searing in his brain
more than anything else Trump has done, a second insider told the New York Post. Obama is generally heartbroken by the Donald Trump presidency.

(95,247 posts)His greatest flaw as President was not taking his de facto role as Party leader seriously. Our system is for better or worse an adversarial one, and depends for proper function on each side fighting its corner to the utmost. Opposing 'partisanship' simply cedes the field to the opposition.

(7,952 posts)I kept wondering (if these quotes are true) when he was going to get angry andpassionate enough to speak and act out. BTW i and many thousands of Americans have been heartbroken for almost 4 years.

(12,310 posts)I get a little sick of the Obama should have played the angry man meme. White men can be angry, uncouth, threatening, obnoxious, rude, etc. Yeah it really would have worked if Obama had been the angry black man.
Not.

(95,247 posts)But there is certainly something to your point. There were, and probably still are, constraints on his behavior that owe to societal expectations and biased norms. Mrs. Clinton certainly encountered this as well in her campaign. There are forms of forceful behavior it seems are 'white men only' still in our society.
My criticism is not aimed at a lack of forcefulness or restraint in expression of anger. A President can move a good deal in the favor of his Party without making much noise about it. Indeed, there can be value in talking about 'ending partisanship', so long as you are actually being extremely partisan in practice.
The thing to be avoided particularly is negotiating with yourself, trying to figure out what your opponent will accept, and making that your initial offer. It is something reasonable people do, and when dealing with reasonable opponents it can work. But when opponents are not reasonable, they will take this 'best offer' as indicating they can make you give up even more than you already have. And if you are not willing to walk away with a 'take it or leave it, it's all the same to me', they will succeed. It is better to pitch your initial offer sky-high, and make the opposition work for even the slightest concession, the least moderation of your position.

(29,067 posts)The United States not only treated Barack Obama "like a human being", they elected him to its highest office. No need for exaggeration.

(5,255 posts)It's highly unpopular to say so around here, and it's in tension with how wonderful, empathetic and smart Obama is, but he made a serious mistake by thinking he could work with Republicans who would never, ever, ever work with him. And never did. Worse, after experiencing that in the bruising fight to enact the ACA, Obama stopped engaging with the domestic arena. Of course, there were limits on what he could do thanks to Democratic campaign misadventures leading to the elections of so many Republicans.
That tide has now turned. Many of those Republicans are now out of government. More are on their way, including some who perhaps don't know it yet. It's a great time for Obama to step up, help Biden into office, and help remedy the do-nothing-for-others, for-profit, narcissistic scourge that is modern GOP orthodoxy.

(95,247 posts)It falls within the classic definition of tragedy.

(5,255 posts)You're quite right. I had not thought of it that way. Tragic indeed. But less so by far if he now understands.

That's what we're fighting.

(458 posts)Obama, except for his campaign rhetoric, has been somewhat of a milquetoast guy. Where has he been the last three years??? I appreciate his sudden interest, but he needs to go out and kick some ass, and not some mild statements of how poor a job Trump has done. And not just about the virus situation, but EVERYTHING Trump has done (which is one reason the impeachment failed....because of ONLY TWO articles of impeachment, when there should have been MANY MORE!!)

Unlike the orange menace, you know he holds himself accountable. That he should have done more in '16 to expose drumpf. He couldn't have known the extent to which the Rs would go along with drumpf's satanic plan.

(3,696 posts)I call bull sh*t on Obama thinking Biden couldn't beat Trump. Polls always showed he'd be competitive against Trump. That he didn't do well in the first 3 races 2 of which are caucuses is a different matter. I hope Dems wake up and change the Primary calendar and do away with caucuses.
