"SNIP.....

Politico: “Trump aides and allies say they are growing confident that an earlier restart amid the coronavirus pandemic could help the president in his reelection campaign.”

“They point to emerging signs around the country. Trump-supported activists are protesting strict stay-at-home orders. Conservative groups’ internal polling in red-leaning and swing states show a significant uptick in Americans who favor reopening the country. A growing chorus of Republican lawmakers across the nation are on board.”

“A swift economic restart, however, could backfire politically for Trump if it causes a flare up.”

That won’t happen

They can throw open the doors of every shopping mall, theater, and restaurant and a vast majority of people won’t go spending money.

They don’t feel safe.

Many are struggling economically and no longer have that disposable income.

So fine. Open up everything. We will still be in a severe depression in November.

Facts are a harsh mistress.

Exactly. They think that the can "will" the economy into a quick rebound. Such incredible hubris. The virus has other plans and there is nothing they can do about it.

If your state and county officials withdrew all shelter-in-place/stay-at-home orders today, are you going to get on an airplane, watch a film in a movie theater, or sit down in a restaurant tomorrow?

I'm not. My closest family members are not. Even if the rules get relaxed, our behavior won't go back to what it was before these rules. Because our change in behavior was not caused by the rules. It was caused by the phenomenon which prompted the rules (i.e. the novel virus pandemic which is potentially life-threatening to members of our household).

And Trump/Repukes have done fuck-all to fix the underlying issue, and have actively made it worse at nearly every opportunity.

Even if half (or whatever fraction) of the country changes its behavior back to pre-pandemic patterns, the economic disruption will not end -- because the rest of us are not changing back any time soon.

I don't know when I will be able to go to a coffee shop, book store, restaurant, clothing store, shopping mall, movie theater, or travel somewhere by means other than my own car -- but I know it will be a long-ass time from now.

and businesses still not choose to open. If you are a business that relies on people physically coming into your store, you will have to make a decision. Are enough people going to enter my shop to justify opening fully or if they should stick with things like online orders, carry out, etc. It costs a lot to open. You have to pay people to come work, pay for using power, etc. if you cant cover those costs you cant justify opening fully.

Would you open a hotel you knew would be at 10% occupancy for the next month or two? Open a restaurant that you couldnt fill past 50% capacity, and likely never hit that?

Even if you do, are you going to hire back everyone you had before?

It may take years to restore faith and feeling safe in gathering in crowds such as restaurants, sporting events, theaters, etc. The notion that the economy was "booming" was Trump's biggest asset in reelection. He wont have that now for sure.
