More Than 1,800 Inmates Test Positive at Single Prison

More than 1,800 inmates at a single correctional facility — almost three-quarters of its detainees — have tested positive for the coronavirus, Ohio’s Department of Rehabilitation and Correction reported Sunday.

The Marion Correctional Institution, about 60 miles north of Columbus, has 667 inmates who have not tested positive for the virus, officials say. They have all been placed in quarantine, and the state’s DRC said Sunday that it “has taken an aggressive and unique approach to testing, which includes tests of all staff and inmates” at Marion, the Pickaway Correctional Institution and the Franklin Medical Center, a facility for Ohio’s inmates.

The state’s prison system has now reported 2,426 coronavirus cases, 21 percent of the state’s overall count. As of Sunday, Marion Correctional had not reported any inmate deaths related to covid-19, the disease the virus causes. There have been 109 positive tests and one virus-related death for the facility’s staff.

It’s scary as hell. Thursday was the last time I tried calling the main number and no one is answering the phone. He has not called in weeks. No letters, either. I think they are totally locked down. He has a few health conditions, but not any that would qualify him for the proposed home confinement- if that actually even happens. It’s so frustrating because there is nothing, absolutely nothing, we can do about it. It was a drug charge. He doesn’t deserve a death sentence. We have no idea if he is sick or what the hell is going on.

that they are okay.
that is scary, and what a stupid thing to put someone on the death row for drugs!
I can understand serial killers and the like, but drugs? seriously...

He got 33 months. But if he gets the virus he could die. They are packed in there like sardines and 6 inmates have died from Covid19. About 40 inmates have tested positive and 35 staff. Several are in the hospital on ventilators. About 80 more inmates are showing symptoms and are still in the prison under quarantine. That was the last report in the news, 3 days ago.
