You make an excellent point, the states are suffering lack of revenue for vital programs, unemployment among these.

Direct grants to states makes the most sense.

We need to be rid of Trump ASAP.

the employers have modern payroll systems to get money into the hands of their workers, unlike some state UC systems still running on COBOL. And, paychecks generate revenue into the Social Security System, UC payments do not.

when I got UC in 2002-03. I would imagine that it exists in all fifty states, since UC is Federally taxable income.

The next Social Security Trustees report that estimates the date that the trust fund will be exhausted will be scary, in my opinion. It's been slipping a year for every year that passes, in my observation. FICA taxes are the only thing adding more slack, and they are in a tailspin right now.

I don't.

Nor do I imagine that the only people who need food, shelter, etc., are those who qualify for unemployment insurance or that that money is meant to benefit only the people who get to cash the checks.

I don't believe a glitch at your company means millions of checks to needed recipients are wasted money. I do believe that all possible solutions involve differing sets of costs and benefits. I know I don't begin to know what they are, and I also know they were evaluated and argued over extensively between Democrats and the massively corrupt Republicans controlling the senate before this means was selected.

Humility. Support for principles. Respect for knowledge and competence. Rejection of corruption. Awareness of ignorance.

Legitimately small businesses have benefited from the PPP. Unfortunately, when republicans are involved, there has also been vast corruption and abuse. And we're not talking about spreading around $250,000 checks or $10 million checks.

Unemployment is also critical, and states have been overwhelmed by 25 million workers who are suddenly unemployed and not eligible for PPP payments. These should also be funded. But again, see above re corruption and abuse.
