4. Google is providing wi-fi and chromebooks

Wednesday Google was providing more than 100,000 Wi-Fi broadband access points across the state to help bridge the digital divide for people who need internet access during the coronavirus shelter-in-place.

In addition, Google would also be providing thousands of Chromebooks for people who needed a device to be able to take advantage of the free Wi-Fi access points, which would be provided at no charge for at least three months.

“Those 100,000 points will help us substantially address the digital divide issues, the rural issues, the equity issues that are at play even in the best of times, but substantively are highlighted in these more difficult times,” said Newsom.

She said knows of her family's overall privilege, and she could only imagine what it is like for others who do not have the resources that her family does.

Her husband, Gov. Gavin Newsom, credited his wife for working the phones to solicit donations from some of the big companies, like Google, Apple and Zoom.

"Some days have been more frustrating than others," Newsom said of his wife's phone solicitations.

But overall, with the help of others, the Newsoms said they have been able to secure tens of thousands of high-tech equipment for students as they will be required to finish the school year at home because of coronavirus.
