According to a report from Politico, conservative allies of Donald Trump are advising him to move quickly on pushing the re-opening of the country as soon as possible to satisfy his base and, thereby, salvage his re-election prospects. According to one influential conservative, President Trump has one month to either win or lose the November presidential election.
Trump aides and allies say they are growing confident that an earlier restart amid the coronavirus pandemic could help the president in his reelection campaign, according to six people close to the White House or Trump campaign. They point to emerging signs around the country. Trump-supported activists are protesting strict stay-at-home orders. Conservative groups internal polling in red-leaning and swing states show a significant uptick in Americans who favor reopening the country. A growing chorus of Republican lawmakers across the nation are on board.
As Adam Brandon, president of FreedomWorks, explained, If you dont see something start to happen
youre going to see a conservative revolt by our base. The worst strategy for him is to keep things shut until August. Trump is basically going to win or lose his election right now, in the next month.
A swift economic restart, however, could backfire politically for Trump if it causes a flare up. Public health experts caution that the country currently lacks the robust testing capacity needed to relax social-distancing guidelines, and cases in many states have yet to peak, Politicos Anita Kumar wrote ...

(13,776 posts)Literally, how could it not?
His reluctance to pull every possible string to make tests available is inexplicable. That's the only way things reopen without a second spike. Magical thinking didn't work the first time--it's not going to work the second time.

"If there is a flare up"
OF COURSE THERE WILL BE A FLARE UP! That is how the science of epidemiology works! Do they believe in magical thinking or are they just too damn dumb to know?
And before this....
They nominate one village idiot who nearly destroys the country, causes over 1 million deaths by starting wars with 2 countries that never attacked us and sends us into a recession and then the next time.............They nominate another village idiot who is nearly destroying the country and causes thousands of deaths and probably sends the country into a recession.

Oil is in negative territory.
People don't have excess disposable income.
Many won't go anywhere anyway because they feel unsafe.
And now many more people will die.

(63,221 posts)Sometimes it just amazes me how stupid and short-sighted they are. They think like little children. If they just wish and hope hard enough, their dreams will come true! It's pretty much how they approach everything.

Stupid is, as stupid does.
Idiots, all idiots (everyone of them, rump, cronies, allies, etc.) all contributed to the mess we're in now, and are acting like stupid headless chickens, running around aimlessly.

(6,008 posts)Sensible (i.e. Democratic) Governors will not allow the states to open prematurely. They will follow the best practices advice given by public health experts, and the example of the 1918 pandemic. There will be some irresponsible red state republican governors that will open up too early and we will inevitably see a spike in infections and deaths. It seems inevitable that this is what is going to play out.

(24,366 posts)70% of the populations of AL, MS, AR, ND, SD, WY, MT, ID, NE, IA, and OK and probably FL will very likely be exposed at the very least, and hundreds of thousands will get sick, and thousands more will needlessly die.
That's the way I see it playing out. I said yesterday that I think the total deaths from this will number over a half million in this country.
We have utterly forgotten "United We Stand".
It has morphed into "I'm going to do what I want, and fuck you guys!"

(24,406 posts)I think most people would forgive a President for a bad economy due to circumstances like these beyond his/her control. It's weird that they don't think that bodies piling up wouldn't, you know, be bad for his re-election. Or are they thinking that, having done a slapdash and, frankly, pathetic job at responding to just the first wave of the crisis, that, once states "re-open" that that's the end of the story and any further deaths are just on the governors?

(70,683 posts)For some reason much was made here over Piers ranting about how SHITLER (& BoJo) aren't demonstrating admirable traits of leaders in WW II.
Yet Piers addressed "Donald" directly, saying that he could salvage the re-election if he magically starts doing those admirabe trait things.
And Piers ranted that this is not a time to play politics, yet didn't notice he was linking "leadership" to *salvaging the re-election" - which is not only politics, but CYNICAL politics, doing things JUST to win an election.
He and the usually good guy STELTER from Reliable Sources (Piers is a reliable source?!1) completely skipped over that SHITLER's complete unfitness existed *before* the current crisis and will always be there, their committing the same fallacy as many have done from Day 1, which is, hoping he will "grow" and change and BE SOMEBODY ELSE.

(11,949 posts)Had he been a real president he would have prepared everyone, including his nuts that this could be a BFD and we may have to take drastic actions.
Instead he created the belief in his shit-for-brains followers this is all a hoax or a conspiracy to bring him down. So he has no good options left.
Keep doing what science calls for and see his base explode or open early and see death sweep over the nation. Or at least the red states that will open up ASAP and let the virus run rampant.

(3,131 posts)The impact to urban and rural areas could be different. New York City was likely impacted disproportionately because of population density and mass transit.
Trump is an idiot and evil. Other republicans are just evil. Not saying there is a plan but that type of thinking could be influencing decisions.
As an economic plan its stupid. The economy wont improve without cities. Morally its repugnant to weigh lives by rural versus urban.

(4,930 posts)All they have to do is look back to the 1918 flu pandemic. A spike was reached and then restrictions were relaxed...then a larger spike ensued because people didn't want to go back to the behaviors that were working and saving lives. Countless thousands more died that could have lived because of it.
But no!....we can't learn from history, that is a fool's errand according to the GOP.
