From the article:
Only 22 percent of Americans say they support the protesters. Despite Trumps messaging, even Republicans oppose the protests 47 percent to 36 percent. Asked whether they agree or disagree with Trumps LIBERATE tweets, only a quarter of Americans say they agree.

In the contest between sanity and Trump, sanity is winning. And this should show us that Trump's supporters may be loud, and they may get media coverage, but Trump's open insanity is having an effct.

(81,136 posts)I heard a report this morning citing a community in Kentucky that saw a spike in cases after a protest.
Perhaps this will have an effect on their numbers. I'm actually hoping some of those idiots will come around, once they contract the disease, assuming they recover, of course.
In my totally amateur observations of human nature I've learned that it's VERY hard for people to admit they were wrong. NOBODY wants to do that, and they'll often have to be forcibly shoved forward by almost literally being kicked in the ass. NOBODY wants to admit they were wrong, much less that they've been HAD. Because then, that means they have to admit they were complete fools. It's mighty hard to admit that. Redemption doesn't come easy. Never has.
in March, Jennifer Rubin wrote an article saying that more republicans than democrats are likely to die from the virus. Certainly the virus does not have a preference (between republicans or democrats) but because republicans seem to prefer less restrictive policies, they are more likely to spread the disease.
JENNIFER RUBIN, WASHINGTON POST: There is a particular cruelty/irony that it is their core viewers, the Republican older viewers, who are the most at risk.
And when you think about it, which party immediately canceled all of their rallies? Which party immediately started having their political figures really portray and use their lives as an example? It was the Democrats.
So, I hate to put it this way, but there will be less Democratic deaths because there will be less mass gatherings, there will be less opportunities for people to congregate and share this horrible disease. So it is really a very short-sighted strategy.

yesterday I saw a similar article at dkos that says 30% more republicans than democrats will die from the virus for similar reasons.
To the extent Republican governors are hesitating to declare strict containment measures for political reasons, it will eventually become clear that they got the politics exactly backwards: instituting stricter measures early-on would have helped keep their most loyal voters alive.
But neither Republican governors (for the most part) nor Donald Trump paid any attention to this basic fact. Probably because they, just like their constituents were too busy soaking up the happy lies on Fox News.
Its clear that social distancing measures reduce the fatality rate from COVID-19. Its equally clear that reducing those efforts would result in more infections and deaths astronomically across the board. But by pushing his sycophants in GOP statehouses to relax social distancing measures to fight off the COVID-19 pandemic, and by urging his followers to rebel against those measures in so-called swing states, Trump is not only proposing killing more Republicans, hes also (literally) killing his chances of re-election.

So for the past several years, it has become obvious that white people are diminishing as a block of voters & blocks of brown voters are increasing. Republicans now realize they need every white voter they can find. And now, because of their belief that everything will be ok if they try to live life as normally as we used to with few restrictions, they are killing off the few voters who still want to vote for them!

Proud Liberal Dem
(24,396 posts)because they were an opposition party to President Obama who, for them (and for no good reason), was a galvanizing lightning rod for the Republicans, whom shamelessly exploited the Tea Party to help rebound from the W. Bush years, even though it helped elevate a new loony breed of Republicans which paved the way for Trump. How does Trump, the current President of the country, benefit from an insurrection against states- of which he is the President? Yeah, he can try to bully and intimidate- by proxy- States Governors he doesn't like, but, none of the Governors whom are being attacked by Trump and his protestors are inherently unlikable and are actually quite popular and the protesters may make them MORE popular and turn more of the state's population against them- and Trump. Trump needs states like Whitmer's and Wolf's and Walz's to have a shot of winning in November, which may not happen if he turns most of the people there against him. And that's not even to discuss how he has repeatedly shortchanged states (almost certainly purposefully) with Democratic Governors. Republicans live there too but they may not blame the Governors but actually blame Trump.
guillaumeb
(42,641 posts)And the fact that 37% support him shows that 37% of voters will be fooled by this con man, and fooled repeatedly.
But polling also shows that most voters, including GOP voters, support the shutdown. In my view, motivation is key, and if 2018 was an indicator, 2020 will show Trump losing, and the GOP losing the Senate as well.
And if that happens, 37% of voters will blame the deep state, or President Obama, or HRC, or the media. Or all of the above in a unified conspiracy theory.

A real hero would die for their beliefs. Let them all be heroes (in time for November).
As far as medical heroes, there's a cardiologist (Murdock?) in Wausau WI who was seen at the Sean Duffy rally and he's been suspended indefinitely by the clinic.
And if Duffy catches the CV, his baby #9 has a bad heart (pre-existing condition) and could possibly die. That's the baby that LIBERATED my district from Duffy when he stepped down for family reasons.

Too stupid to realize the many differences. Not going to bring them all up because the elephant in the room is a pandemic that could kill someone you love. Even my republican coworkers are really taking it seriously.
Almost all the red state governors who are about to lift restrictions are in states that are not even close to peaking. Texas is gonna be ugly.
The ones protesting are the Q nuts. They are certifiable.
Here in Orlando they were a joke. Unfortunately I look for my governor to try to take the easy way out. Put it back on local governments. Then we will increasingly high rates in Jacksonville and the Panhandle.

They're getting Trump's still-mobile voters to occupy space on the Tee Vee while Trump's shut-in voters are isolating and watching Tee Vee (like my streaming-serviceless Dad).
Essentially, they are part of a 2020 campaign strategy, like Trump's daily briefings.
