The current rhetoric oozing out of the orifices of the beholden is not only implying that we should be willing to lay down our lives for the sake of an economic abstraction, the economy, that is rife with the grosses inequality ever seen, but it is even being stated at times explicitly.
There have been long, brutal wars in our history where people made great sacrifices and suffered loses for the sake of the country and freedom. The soldiers fought, died, were maimed, came back with mental scars, etc. Their families sacrificed many things for the war efforts and gave their husbands and sons blood and lives to the grave for it.
In no way am I going to accept even the slightest suggestion that that should be the case in this crisis. That is, even as naive, misguided and easily manipulated groups of people jump on that bandwagon and conflate a badly broken system with their own freedom and survival. That is what they are really up against, but darn if they are going to accept what that is telling them about their country, who is running it and how little they matter in that equation. The bluster and energy being expended to make noise about being raked under by a system that is not much concerned about any of their values and their very lives is wasted energy and contributes to the matters at hand.
All of us might be capable of shifting from our self interests and every day lives in order to defend the noble context of freedom and democracy from a foreign enemy and that might be difficult, but it is a matter of true patriotism. After all, if some external threat were a clear and present danger, we would have to fight to preserve what allows us to live and thrive. That makes sense.
We have a systemic problem. It is internal. The illustrious simulation of America has glitches in the picture, the transmission is getting preempted by a pandemic. The masks on the major players are peeling up on the edges and America's facade is struggling now to hold up and stay relevant. It may not be able to do that much longer.
This is not a war. This is an internal crisis that calls for change and action. To even suggest that it calls for sacrificing our lives or those of our friends and loved ones is an egregious and dangerous lie that does not correspond with our nation's best interests or its founding ideology. The economy is an idea based on an aggregation of things and it is highly influenced by the Pipers at the Gate who are concerned about their investments and would gladly throw us in the fire now to keep their blaze going at all costs.
I, for one, will not lay my life down for that. The economy should serve us, and not the other way around. We all work hard enough as it is. It is time for a real, unmistakable paradigm change if we are all to survive.

(32 posts)I took 2 weeks of voluntary time off - no pay. NBD. I went back to work for a week and was laid off. Filed for unemployment and again, NBD. I am for the time being and foreseeable future financially GTG. Many, many, many Americans are not. Needing to find a common sense way to get some people back to work while making reasonable safety and health considerations is going to have to happen at some point. We can't all chill at home easily. This isn't a radical concept.

(12,712 posts)The "love" of money.
1 Timothy 6:10
For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
However, Mammon worshiping fits.
1. New Testament. riches or material wealth. Matt. 6:24; Luke 16 ,11,13.
1. (often initial capital letter) a personification of riches as an evil spirit or deity.

(9,895 posts)We have a gift right now...
That gift is a much needed paradigm shift, away from "profits over people" and "mindless consumerism" and towards a "economy that works for all" and "sustainable living".
Now, some have been advocating for this for decades already, and it's true that "Green New Deal" as a term has been poisoned by the current powers that be...but this full stop to the economy that was is the chance to reflect, analyze and rebuild something new and better in its place.
My great fear is that the gift will be left to rot and we'll end up right back where we started in the end.
Those among us that see "protest" as being valid in these times, especially vapid and insipid "protest", are the enemy of rational thought, of the Enlightenment itself. This dangerous cheer-leading of stupidity and ignorance and hostility to science and facts is alarming and dangerous.
I can see opportunity to change the world and America's role in it once more, but we are wholly incapable of this under current management...

(12,712 posts)I see some vision in your comment and I think you are on spot there.
I was hoping that the implications of a visionary and transformational perspective would show up in the comments and, for the sake of brevity, I didn't really go into explicit detail about that.
To seize the opportunity for change that the chaos of a crisis brings is our challenge if we want to continue forward as a country and, even more importantly, as a species.
