Senate Interim Funding Bill for Coronavirus Relief Spurns Progressive Priorities

"This isn't good."
byEoin Higgins,

This is developing story... stay tuned for updates...

Progressives exploded in frustration Tuesday as the Senate prepared to pass an interim funding bill for coronavirus relief that once again included no funding for the Post Office, food banks, or election security, and provided no bailout oversight and no funding for states and cities—leading critics to wonder why Democratic lawmakers refused to use their leverage and hold up the bill.

"This isn't good," tweeted The Nation's national affairs correspondent Jeet Heer. "It's imperative to get money out the door fast but these are one sided agreements."

Things NOT expected in bill likely to be voted on by Senate today:

-- Hazard pay 4 frontline workers;

-- $ for states & cities;

-- Elections security;

-- More oversight on bailout;

-- Food stamp $;

-- Rent freeze;

-- More stimulus checks

Timing on "Phase 4" unclear

The bill does include $321 billion for small businesses, $75 billion for hospitals, and $25 billion for coronavirus testing. But to Center on Budget and Policy Priorities president Robert Greenstein, that's not enough.

"While providing needed support to small businesses and hospitals, the new COVID-19 package announced today falls short even as an interim measure, failing to deliver crucial state and local fiscal relief and food assistance," Greenstein said in a statement Tuesday.

No problem. All the Republican Senate needs is a stand alone bill to bail out the oil industry. Autumn Apr 2020 #5

control the House of Representatives? Common Dreams and their ilk can always be counted on to blame Democrats first while giving the Pukes a pass every time.

It like they expect Nancy to make the Senate do what they want the Senate to do. I’d be nice if they blasted the Repubs for a change.

ouse Democrats could have moved to pass their own bill addressing issues important to progressives.

Mother Jones reporter Ari Berman noted that the bill, which contains no election funding, flies in the face of assurances by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) that it would.

Disposable citizens, just like all the other stuff we buy and throw away and waste. You just toss them when you are done. No muss, no fuss. If they are past their expiration date or defective well, hey what about that Soylent Green idea? Might be a cash cow, lots of protein to render.

It's not a wealthy country, right? What do you expect in a 3rd-World Banana republic posing in drag in order to get us to pay taxes that are basically slated to provide corporate welfare as needed. We are even being expected to give our lives so that that kind of economy can live on, nice and comfy, for a few--who have so much wealth it is historically, astronomically phenomenal and would make the Pharaoh's and Kings of the past envious. So, no more of that pesky, "We the People!" jazz, that's just a line of coke on an escort.

Pay your dues to corporate socialism while you watch the covfefe gatherings blather on to support in some delusional, bad acid-trip notion of liberty and rights. Die for capitalism. Work, shop and drop.

Now, clear out those bodies, they are an eyesore and used and obsolete human resources are just so repugnant. There are more where they came from. Why bother with elections security if the underpinnings of the country reflects a corrupt gang of money changers living it up despite what happens to the rest of us? They obviously matter more in a crisis.

I am a progressive in many ways, (just about anything realistic is in contrast to the Dinosaur Brigades of the GOP) and, despite my grumbling up there, I do hope that those glaring issues of what is being left out right now will be sparks that ignite a new paradigm.

I mean, besides bail out Exxon/Mobil, but that's in the works.
