I thought of when I read that number and then I Googled it...2,977 died on 9/11.

I just looked at the most recent numbers and Russia and Singapore are having tons of new cases. The line graph for "new deaths" world wide is is steeper than "new cases" too.

5. Deaths are a lagging indicator of spread

because of how slow the disease progresses - deaths today are an indication of how fast the disease was spreading 2-3 weeks ago, not how fast it's spreading today. When deaths peak and start decreasing - that means new cases starting decreasing many days ago.
