As doctors see coronavirus-kidney link, worry grows over dialysis machines

Jamal Uddin’s coronavirus story began like many others: His health deteriorated, he was hospitalized, he tested positive for COVID-19, and he was treated. Then his health began improving. He was going to be taken off the ventilator -- until his potassium levels spiked

A sudden increase in potassium levels, a result of kidney damage, can be treated with a dialysis machine. But at the hospital in hard-hit New York City where Uddin was being treated, his family says every dialysis machine was already in use – a sign, experts say, of the growing connection between COVID-19 and kidney problems.

Doctors attempted creative workarounds to treat Uddin – including peritoneal dialysis, which removes fluid through a tube coming from the abdomen – but to no avail. He died within days.

“They said that other patients are doing a lot worse than him,” said Uddin’s wife, Jesmin, who recounted his story to ABC News. “Everyone is advertising there are not enough ventilators, that's what I was afraid of -- whether he was going to have a ventilator or not. People are getting better from the ventilator. The lung is getting clearer, but they're not getting dialysis. And that's why people are dying."

I have underlying conditions that are making me high-risk to begin with...my pancreas is essentially no longer making sufficient insulin to handle my diabetes - which in turn causes me to need more and more insulin injections to maintain proper glucose levels...and the injections and pump that I have been forced to depend on are causing a hormonal imbalance and has taken me from needing to lose a few pounds to resembling a goddamn Orca in the last 12 months (gaining over 45 pounds in all)...

So...I am Diabetic, Hyper-tensive (by genetics) and also a 10-year Survivor of Renal Cell Carcinoma...this damn virus is apparently the almighty's message to me personally that I am not in charge of anything down here and I am on borrowed time as well...

Kind of sucks to see so many in GOP positions really rooting for the virus to spread and for me to get it and likely die, but on the plus side, I no longer feel even the slightest guilt about wishing for them to all die horrific deaths any more...

Gotta take the bad with the horrific I guess...

I don't like having such a gloomy outlook on my fellow Americans, but I really do believe that many of them actually WANT people to die because they have some how come to believe if we have different politics that we must be enemies to vanquish or celebrate their demise...

I'd like to feel differently, it's not a good place mentally for sure to feel this way, but their actions and words and willingness to hold signs like the woman in TN looking to "sacrifice the weak" make it impossible for me to fell otherwise right now...

Best wishes to you and your family though...stay safe as possible.
