BBC: Coronavirus: Social restrictions 'to remain for rest of year'

The UK will have to live with some disruptive social measures for at least the rest of the year, the government's chief medical adviser has said.

Prof Chris Whitty said it was "wholly unrealistic" to expect life would suddenly return to normal soon.

He said "in the long run" the ideal way out would be via a "highly effective vaccine" or drugs to treat the disease.

But he warned that the chance of having those within the next calendar year was "incredibly small".

"This disease is not going to be eradicated, it is not going to disappear," he said, at the government's daily coronavirus briefing.

"So we have to accept that we are working with a disease that we are going to be with globally... for the foreseeable future."

I respect those who give realistic, yet unpopular, assessments. BigmanPigman Apr 2020 #1
Still waiting for such an assessment coming from our leaders, or did I miss it? Baclava Apr 2020 #3
Not our Fed leaders, only state and local. BigmanPigman Apr 2020 #4

In other countries, that is most likely doable, for citizens. Jamastiene Apr 2020 #5

Any Fed official who speaks up gets fired. Foreign leaders are also more trustworthy, like the mayor of the Italian town that was hit super hard and warned us, and Angela Merkel (who was planning ahead and said Oktoberfest should be skipped in Oct.).

...to have Earl Grey Tea-Partiers start declaring that "if we're going to have to deal with it for the foreseeable future, it's best to just let it burn through the population and develop herd immunity," just like we're seeing here.

In America, some people were lucky to get the one stimulus check. I don't see our government protecting us from harm or helping any of us out or giving us more stimulus money along the way. Other countries are helping their citizens much better. It will be tough on them, but they can pull through because their governments actually gives a shit about their citizens. In America, $ rules all and we have a madman in charge who is trying to stoke violence and everything else horrible.
