My son is in Naples, Florida, worked fulltime at a metal fabricator (layed off via virus, so unemployment is unlikely too by the looks of Florida). He is 28 years old and a hard worker just trying to get ahead. He is in default on a student loan. In the irs2go app he recieved a message that his check is going to pay a federal debt. Luckily I am in a place where I can loan him money. My 26 year old daughter isn't getting her $1200.00 because she checked the box that asked if she can be claimed as a dependent on someone's taxes. She also isnt working and truly needs it. We are loaning her $$$. I can only imagine how many are out there that have similar stories. It appears, sadly, that those that need it the most are being left out. Heartbreaking, especially for those out there that are homeless, hungry and haven't parents that can loan them $$$ The well off are certainly getting theirs though.

(2,340 posts)You did not claim her on your tax return. Then hopefully she will be set up to receive the check. Might take awhile but she should then receive a check.

They had no problem navigating the troublesome paperwork system.

(1,671 posts)He graduated college in May 2019, had to have surgery due to an injury that happened at the end of April, surgery was postponed until mid-August due to him having pneumonia, he recovered/rehabbed for the rest of 2019 and finally was able to move to NYC on January 1st to seek his fame and fortune. He applied for every job he was remotely qualified for, had interviews, but was still unemployed when COVID-19 hit NYC. We've been paying his rent, school loan, utilities and groceries. No relief check for him because he was our dependent for all of 2019. Since his last job was work-study on campus that ended in May 2019, he isn't eligible for unemployment benefits either.
Fortunately, we can support him for as long as it takes. However, he's not going to be able to renew his apartment lease if he doesn't have a job by the end of the year. We aren't that generous. Time to move back with mom & dad.

(13,058 posts)qualify for unemployment insurance?
You might want to check out this guide. It is my understanding that people in your son's situation do qualify. If he hasn't yet he should apply.

(1,584 posts)About 2.5 million have been able to apply in spite of constant crashing of the system. About 40,000 have actually received a payment. More Americans have died of Covid-19 than have been paid by Florida unemployment insurance.
The Republicans are opening the tap for business and shutting it off for people. Moscow Mitch has a plan for State and local governments to go bankrupt to further inflict pain on people. And sadly our Democratic leadership is falling into their trap.

(13,058 posts)It doesn't mean one does not qualify. It means they are having trouble getting the system to work for them because it is overburdened. That has been a problem in many states including here in Nevada. And I understand that a lot of people need that money right away so it's a big hassle for them. But if they qualify on paper they need to keep trying and hopefully eventfully they will get through. That's about all they can do right now.

(1,584 posts)The system was designed to fail. And Moscow Mitch wanting states to go bankrupt further exacerbates the problem. PPP gave away money so quickly that they are shoveling another half trillion to business. Nothing for actual people.
The strings attached to the $1200 payment is a further example of the disparity. Harvard can get billions right away, even though they have a huge endowment. Actual people are left out because Republic politicians dont want money actually in the hands of people. Its a full on money grab by the rich and will provide a negligible benefit to the country.

And the IRS doesn't use email for anything official. Period. Just a reminder for everyone
This is the link to request your payment/see whether you qualify/track your payment (not sure how well that works though).

(4,533 posts)Someone took her as a dependent. That person got five hundred dollar fed tax credit, not a stimulus payment, an IRS credit, other dependent credit. And there is probably a savings from the state tax return. So it isnt a total 1200 loss at the family level. If not tax returns can be amended and a 1200 stimulus will flow in time.m
