Oh, it's real - Charleston area breweries may dump beer as pandemic kills keg sales

With draft beer sales virtually zeroed out thanks to the mandated closure of on-premise drinking due to the coronavirus pandemic, Charleston area brewers may soon have to dispose of full kegs of beer that have gone stale in distributors’ warehouses.

“We’ve never had to deal with dumping beer before,” said COAST Brewing Company’s co-owner Jaime Tenny. The North Charleston brewery has been turning out organic craft beer from its brick-clad redoubt on the naval shipyard for 13 years, but the COVID-19 shutdown marks the first time the prospect of a mass disposal of “out-of-code” (read: no longer fresh) beer has come up.

“This is new to us,” said Tenny. “We’re looking at a lot of kegs in my distributor’s warehouse that are getting to that point where we to look at options, and the top option is to dump it all.”

Sounds like they're trying to recoup some on these full barrels.

One couldn't transport an alcoholic beverage in an unsealed container.

We've always had to-go growler fills here.

A crowler is even more sealed: it's essentially an on-the-spot canning of poured draft beer. There's a machine that seals the top on to an oversized aluminum can.

Youz have both growlers and crowlers to go in Alabama: http://www.loosabrews.com/

Cheers!

I thought one of the things that spiked when people are going through really hard times was alcohol, drugs, and sex. I understand the prostitution going down but usually people are trying to find some escape despite not having much money.

I'm afraid chocolate will be the next casualty. I cannot see a reason to live or muster the will to live if they take chocolate away.

Why do they think they need to dump the beer? I'm more of a liquor drinker myself and hate beer, but I hate even more to see it dumped. Sell it online somehow.

Every other day we go there to save the beer! Every day binges are too much at our age. But! we are making a huge dent in the 12 kegs that were tapped when the bar closed. There are twelve more in the walk in. If it ALL goes to shit - I, for one, will be shit faced!

I don’t even have a tap. But I guess I could call my local breweries and see if I could get a good deal on a slim keg. I know the owners and they might lend me a tap.

Old fridge. In the basement. Knocked a hole in the side of the fridge, ran the hose through it, stuffed insulation in the remaining space and then slapped on fiberglass (they also had a motorboat).

Downside, we were minors.

Upside, he couldn't keep track of the amount of beer he and *his* friends drank, so as long as his kids (and *their* friends) didn't abuse his lack of reckoning they weren't caught.

(Second downside: They were caught fairly frequently, because with 3 sons' not coordinating their beer consumption ...)
