... Remdesivir with Ebola also.
New data on Gileads remdesivir, released by accident, show no benefit for coronavirus patients. Company still sees reason for hope

Trump pumped Remdesivir earlier

But the gambit appears to be paying off for drugmakers like Gilead. Trump mentioned remdesivir at his very next press briefing, on April 14, saying that the experimental treatment has shown very promising results. Trumps repeated backing of another potential coronavirus drug, hydroxychloroquine, has already sent demand for it soaring across the country.
The president of the United States is insane
Once the country comes to grips with that we can get past this period in our history

But this is a big indicator thsi company was blowing smoke other than Trump mentioning them

(33,474 posts)It is approved in some countries for Ebola, and it was designed appropriately for corona viruses.
It is a nucleoside inhibitor, some of which have worked to cure viral diseases.
Clinical trials fail all the time; they are necessary, in fact. Failures in many ways are as important as successes.
I would have thought it irresponsible to have not tested this drug. The development is done and it might have been off the shelf.
Regrettably, it didn't work, but that's science.
It is not true that if Trump says that the ocean is blue, it is therefore pink, you know, the broken clock thing...

(33,474 posts)Actually, the entire world's scientific community has been communicating with all possible openness on this important crisis.
There are over 1200 scientific papers published on the subject of this drug, remdesivir, in 2020.
Here's just one, from the NEJM, like all Covid papers open sourced:
Compassionate Use of Remdesivir for Patients with Severe Covid-19
Of the 61 patients who received at least one dose of remdesivir, data from 8 could not be analyzed (including 7 patients with no post-treatment data and 1 with a dosing error). Of the 53 patients whose data were analyzed, 22 were in the United States, 22 in Europe or Canada, and 9 in Japan. At baseline, 30 patients (57%) were receiving mechanical ventilation and 4 (8%) were receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. During a median follow-up of 18 days, 36 patients (68%) had an improvement in oxygen-support class, including 17 of 30 patients (57%) receiving mechanical ventilation who were extubated. A total of 25 patients (47%) were discharged, and 7 patients (13%) died; mortality was 18% (6 of 34) among patients receiving invasive ventilation and 5% (1 of 19) among those not receiving invasive ventilation.
CONCLUSIONS
In this cohort of patients hospitalized for severe Covid-19 who were treated with compassionate-use remdesivir, clinical improvement was observed in 36 of 53 patients (68%). Measurement of efficacy will require ongoing randomized, placebo-controlled trials of remdesivir therapy. (Funded by Gilead Sciences.)
How the markets react has nothing to do with science.
Maybe you think that "Funded by Gilead Sciences" is a statement that people should be denied the chance to be treated with the drug, but the science of the paper has nothing to do with your demand for secrecy.
You wouldn't need to be Donald Rumsfeld to hope that the drug worked. If I had Covid-19, I would have been pleased to have been in a clinical trial for the drug, since I am aware of the science of antiviral drugs.
Because Donald Rumsfeld is a stockholder of Gilead doesn't prove that Sofosbuvir didn't cure Hepatitis and save human lives.

(90,302 posts)... this is DU, we're most sophisticated than "markets react" there's something pushing it in this case.

(33,474 posts)...some kind of political point.
It is not true that everyone on the left has respect for science simply because they are on the left. I have seen many, many, many, many posts here in nearly two decades here that are so oblivious of science as to be delusional, some that are in fact, highly insulting to scientists and completely dismissive of scientists.
The data is published, as it should be in an international emergency at the highest scale - with the possible exception of climate change - than anyone has seen in their lifetimes, certainly the greatest short term emergency of our lifetimes.
Lots of people feel it their right to piss and moan from a position of self assumed moral superiority, but they're not helping; they're hurting.
Again, there was a very, very, very, very valid scientific reason to test this drug. If something leaks out, that is to be expected in times like these.
I am proudly on the political left, and have been since I reached adulthood, but I am far more interested in scientific integrity than I am in making ersatz sociopolitical statements of purity.

He knows what he is doing and understands the concepts of right and wrong, he's just constitutionally capable of doing the right thing if that conflicts with his overriding priority ... which is making himself look successful/strong/smart/wealthy, and the object of adulation and respect.
