I know I yell about terrible media framing every day, but it never occurred to me that this is how the
@nytimes
would frame the Presidents suggestion of injecting disinfectants into your body to cure Covid19:
dangerously in the view of some experts

(5,914 posts)In the meantime, I'm working on my second glass of Lysol Toilet Cleaner, and the room is starting to spin.

(2,977 posts)not consider it dangerous, they may consider it natural selection.

(68,576 posts)When scientists talk about natural selection, they are talking about genetics not individuals.

(19,359 posts)It's the individuals with the "poor" genes who die. Therefore the "poor" genes don't get passed down.
Where natural selection doesn't apply, or doesn't apply simply in a on an individual basis is when these protestors expose themselves to the virus by gathering. That can effect others.

(68,576 posts)more suited to their environment are more likely to live long enough to pass their genes on...and over time a species will change or diverge into a new species. over many many years. For this to be natural selection, the protesters would need to share some special sort of gene that make them less likely to survive and reproduce...and that is not the case. I would say stupidity and ignorance is at play here. Natural selection was used to justify all sorts of terrible acts against the less fortunate, those perceived as weak or genetically inferior. However, it was misused and misunderstood which continues even today.

(33,140 posts)It's only the tip of the framing iceberg.
There's also "False equivalency", "Both-siders-ism", "Horse race dependency", "Let's you and him fight", and many others. Bad habits the mass media has fallen into since the demise of in-the-public-interest journalism and reporting following the collapse of news in favor of entertainment.
