Both my wife and my daughter have been receiving checks from their jobs, even though they have been staying home for weeks.
My daughter was told this week that her checks were stopping, and to apply for unemployment.
My wifes place was hoping for an April 15 reopen, moved back to May 1. Looks like that date will slip as well. I cant see her employer continuing to pay her when reopening is basically off the table.
Im guessing many employers who have been taking a wait and see attitude are just about done, and will be laying off workers in droves.

(4,845 posts)The companies that took the "wait and see" and try to be nice to their employees by keeping them on payroll for as long as they can. Those companies are going to have to start laying off people as it's looking less likely that they can go back to "business as usual".

Most everyone else is laid off now. I am in Ohio. We just started getting our unemployment, during the furlough, it was screwed up and you can't call but somehow it got fixed.

I have mixed feelings. Not working doesn't suck. I'm close to retirement anyway so do I really want to dive head first into a high pressure 60-80 hour job?
Anyway, there are still some opportunities out there.

(4,845 posts)Even if we have the businesses open up, everyone will calculate their risk and determine what their "essentials" are and only go to those essentials they need (probably less frequent than previously as well). Who would want to go to a movie, or a broadway show, or sport stadium in close contact with large group in the next few months? Businesses are going to be hurt for a long while (thus workers will work less hours or decreased pay or both).
