Scenes from Georgia's cautious reopening: Lines start early for haircuts

By Alexis Stevens, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
They needed a trim, and couldn’t wait any longer. For the the first time in weeks, some Metro Atlanta hair salons and barbershops reopened Friday. And the lines started early.

The first phase of Gov. Brian Kemp’s plan to reopen Georgia during the coronavirus pandemic included haircut shops and gyms, though not all chose to open their doors.

Not that you can distance. It was the one thing I really didn’t have in my list knowing we were probably going to get sent home.

In another month or two, without tonsorial intervention, it'll reach college level.

It keeps it mostly in place.

I’m already at college level. Mine grows out not down though.

From an April 20th article in the AJC -- What to know about Kemp’s decision to ease coronavirus restrictions:

Q: Can cities and counties make more lenient or restrictive measures if they want?
A: No. The governor said he didn’t want another “hodgepodge” of local restrictions that proliferated before he instituted the statewide shelter-in-place earlier this month, and his statewide order supersedes any city or county measure. Some local leaders quickly pushed back. Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms told ABC News late Monday that while she likely can’t lockdown the city, she will use her pulpit to press residents to stay at home. “We don't know what the governor is looking at, but what I do know is we have nearly 19,000 people who have tested positive as of this evening,” she said.

The map of Novel Coronavirus deaths in Georgia at this link shows county-by-county totals:

These numbers are almost certain to shoot up over the next few weeks as more and more people start ignoring the social distancing guidelines. Inexcusable.

its half million residents (Just those within city limits).

One business owner:

"I said, 'No, absolutely not. Get your hair done for what?'" Watkins said. "There's a pandemic, people are dying. As much as I love the business, now is not the time, regardless of who says it is."

Terrible situation for those owners for whom staying closed means ruin now that GA's state government is forcing them to choose.

who started self isolating weeks BEFORE states called for it? Just one little clue.

When I looked over a chart showing dramatic drops in restaurant reservations, I noticed that the earlier slowdowns, before what happened around 3/16 to cause them to plummet across the nation, were in cities I expected to have more older, higher-risk people.

Big surprise? We're steeling ourselves to cut each others' hair.

(That was the salon mentioned in the article that has clients signing a liability waiver, glaring grammatical error and all!)

It's an upscale salon that's made gobs of money forever, and yet they can't manage to stay afloat a little longer until things are safer?

Other salons are staying closed, including their sorta-nemesis, Jamison Shaw.

They can still spread corona all over the barber and salon. The masks the barber wears isn't really the kind that is protecting him. Really dumb. No one died from not getting a haircut. It's possible now for someone to die from getting one.
