Our state does have data on recovered cases which leaves 5 active in our county.
Some states do not. Interesting.

In some counties the recovered cases are those discharged from hospitals. Those who were never admitted are never discharged.

In others, they simply time out. You tested positive in mid-March, you were sent home because your symptoms were mild. It's 30 days later. You're either dead or recovered, and either way you're off the "active cases" registry.

I don't find the "active cases" to be a useful number. Hospitalizations, discharges, deaths confirmed by test and those suspected by symptoms, sure. It means my information's always lagging reality by about two weeks. But at least it means my data are real and not easily some methodological artefact.

A lot of people like the active cases (meaning "positive tests&quot because they're big scary numbers, and they either like scaring othesr or being scared themselves. Or find it a useful talking point, as long it's not exampled too closely. Rhetoric and logic were different portions of the trivium for good reason (along with grammar)--they're distinct, and ultimately derivative. Still, logic has more application in the quadrivium than rhetoric ever should.
