And ignore the mud-slinging. The country is immune to anything the asshat can throw at him: We're in total survival mode, and we're desensitized to scandal, and the orangutan has only himself to blame for that.

(6,679 posts)I would never call him "sweet" . He will fuck your shit up if you threaten who, or what he cares about. There's no way he has functioned at this high of a level for this many years without being good at letting stupid idiots be known for what they are and either getting them shunned or just flat putting a stop to their crap.
I'll never forget how he oh so subtly played Palin so that she absolutely roasted herself.

(58,785 posts)battling what the Republicans have become.
When the national mood went conservative in the 1980s-90s, he tried to work with those who were getting put in office then, but with him we learned they were no longer the Republicans of the 1970s -- and that those weren't coming back. Instead, the GOP's since been completely taken over by corruption and extremism, and he has absolutely no illusions that this cabal of anti-democracy criminals and authoritarian extremists aren't committed to destroying government of the people. As they tried with their smashing of laws and betrayals of their voters all through Obama's presidency.
Interestingly, we've shown they're no match for Democrats when we have any means of stopping them. Clinton's and Obama's administrations both outmaneuvered them a bunch of times, showing off their special combination of unprincipled smash-through ruthlessness and incompetence at governance.

(506 posts)I think that's the smug, self-satisfied, and lazy path to defeat. I thought we were all in such a hurry to get Bernie out of the way so that Joe could gird his loins against Trump. Guess not, now we can just sit back and let SARS do the work?
At this point most americans have forgotten there's a campaign going on.. Maybe Joe could remind them once in a while? I realize that stepping back and letting Trump shoot himself in the foot is a tempting strategy, but doesnt it seem like a self defeating vacuum of leadership?
I'd prefer to see some activity from the Dem campaign for President rather than some comfortable presumption that "Trump can't win."

(3,050 posts)Yesterday evening Joe had Soul Saturdays where Democratic leaders all spoke and rallied behind our next President Joe Biden. He gave a great message of love, unity, leadership, the pain we are all going through and that we would come out of this.
Great show and message.

(506 posts)The only people paying attention to Joe right now are the ones that already "follow" him. At some point he will need to demand more attention. Maybe later on sometime down the road will be just fine. But the fuse for election day is burning and I assure you I'm not the only person that first heard of Soul Saturday on Sunday.
Americans are all sitting at home, bored, and Trump's behavior is all anyone can talk about. "Joe is a decent guy" is not a campaign slogan that will win anything.
Spring weather is getting started in St Petersburg, according to reports, but I dont know. I'm in the same CD as you, the one where the only campaign signs you see say Trump. Until Joe figures out how to campaign in these weird times my donation $ is staying local, going to Carolyn Long.

(506 posts)"Follow Joe." "Pay more attention." What for? Joe doesn't need to win my vote. I'm already voting for him, come hell or high water (Both of which are on the way). I want him to win, and I think he'd better get his ass in gear. I see he has started a podcast. One among how many other thousands? That's supposed to bolster my confidence, unify the party, and win new voters? Campaigning in a quarantine is very limiting, but he'll have to get more creative than that. Somehow.
Joe was my fourth choice in the primary, so you may understand if I havent caught on fire for him. Like most Americans I'm not signed up for his emails and I dont follow him on twitter. So if there is a lot of action in his campaign and that's the only place to find it then its not going to reach me, like most Americans again, by far.
Again, I want him to win. He doesn't need to work for my vote any more than he needs to work for yours. It's all the other millions that I'm thinking about. Since Super Tuesday, and from the perspective of being distant from the campaign, the proud words of "Ridin' with Biden" are turning into "Hidin' with Biden". A podcast and a TV special are not going to win this campaign, and you know it as well as I do.
I guess I'll just wash my hands again and try to be more patient.

We Want to Kick trump OUT.. and your trying to label Biden as "smug,, self-satisfying, and lazy.. " is WRONG and NOT helping.
Look around and you'll see lots of "activity" instead of relying on what the OP says.

(68,565 posts)it disparages Biden somehow. Biden has been around. I am interested so I watch. Perhaps you might try that simple solution. It would be far better than the constant sniping by some who apparently can't let the primary go...not saying you.

(82,383 posts)It would just start an attack on Biden that he isn't doing anything, even though he's not in office and can't. Framed as Biden cutting down the President in time of crisis. It's not that easy with the pandemic. I would think his campaign would have the savvy to think of a good way to handle it. But if they need your advice, I'm sure there's a way to write to them and warn them.

Let's be honest. People want to wallow in Trump's blood and idiocy far more than they want to hear Biden confirm what we know about him and our party exactly because we already know it -- and are comfortable with our certainty and committed to voting for him. Quiet confidence is not a bad sign.
Hate and controversy are much bigger draws than calm certainty, and Trump's self-mutilations and even immolations incredibly more entertaining. This forum has been one long stream of posts about the 2-hour Trump "presser/rallys" that many are already in danger of suffering withdrawal from.

(6,148 posts)is the idea that "all he has to do..."
I remember in a governor race, a candidate said "vote for me because I am X". He lost. He had no platform. No vision, no ideas, no solutions. He was up against an incumbent with a decent track record. I think he could have done it if he had had a platform.
The last two ads I saw were sickly sweet. They definitely were not aimed at me. I assume they were aimed at people who are sick of the divisiveness.
What I would like to see now, in April, is ads that make people want to CAMPAIGN for him. Votes are not enough.
We have to overcome voter suppression, we have to overcome election tampering. And that takes an incredible network, an army of people committed to helping Biden supporters get to the polls.
Right now, we have to find THOSE people. This is not the time to lay back.
BTW: my only social media is Facebook, and I have never seen the podcasts. Wouldn't know they were happening if not for DU. So, in my book - not effective.
Demsrule86
(68,565 posts)If defeating Trump is not enough to make even those who supported other candidates want to join the Biden campaign and work to defeat Trump, I doubt anything Biden does will matter. The goal posts keep moving.
What will happen is we will put together a Democratic coalition with some Obama voters (some who voted for Trump) as well and win the election without the progressive wing. I think it could still be a wave election in fact. And if those who call themselves 'the progressive wing' choose to sit this one out, they will lose influence not gain influence. And that would be a shame.

(10,500 posts)That is a media myth made up after the election.
Hillary did not believe that victory was inevitable. She campaigned for every vote. And shortly before the election she was in Florida with Al Gore reminding people how close an election can be and that every vote counted.
In 2016 we had an enormous ground game that worked tirelessly in the battle ground states to get every last vote, in case the election was a very tight one.
She prepared diligently for all three debates, remembering that Trump did not do badly in the GOP primary debates, and she totally destroyed Trump, something none of the Republican candidates were able to do. Her domination of Trump had her primed for a decisive victory, until the Comey intervention happened.
2016 was about James Comey's antics. It was about the fake email scandal. Attempts to make it about the quality of the Democratic campaign are not well-founded based on the facts of history.
