FEMA Reportedly Took The 5 Million Masks Ordered For Veterans To Send To Stockpile

Five million face masks ordered by the Veterans Health Administration to protect staff at the department’s hospitals and clinics were taken by the Federal Emergency Management Agency for the Strategic National Stockpile, a top official told The Washington Post.

“I had 5 million masks incoming that disappeared,” said Dr. Richard Stone, the executive in charge of managing the nation’s largest health care system with 1,255 facilities that serve more than 9 million veterans. He told the Post that FEMA instructed vendors with protective equipment ordered by the Veterans Administration to send the shipments instead to the stockpile.

“The supply system was responding to FEMA,” Stone, a former Army deputy surgeon general, told the Post. “I couldn’t tell you when my next delivery was coming in.” Veterans health care facilities were going through about 200,000 masks a day, according to Stone.

Stone acknowledged the problem after Veterans Administration officials had denied their facilities were grappling with shortages even amid mounting complaints from health care professionals.

Several hospitals in seven states surveyed by the Los Angeles Times complained that FEMA officials were showing up unannounced and seizing their supplies, leaving them desperately short and uncertain about where to turn for more equipment.

PeaceHealth, a 10-hospital system in Washington, Oregon and Alaska, had a shipment of testing supplies confiscated. “It’s incredibly frustrating,” CEO Richard DeCarlo told the newspaper.

FEMA also seized 500 ventilators ordered by Colorado this month, according to state officials. Trump then restored 100 of them, apparently as an opportunity to give a shout out to GOP Sen. Cory Gardner, who’s in the middle of a tough reelection campaign in the state.

Why can't we impeach him for these offenses? It seems to me that they are hijacking needed supplies without a warrant, without any due process, and after telling Governors to get their own supplies.

First you tell the states and other entities they are on their own as to supplies, and when they begin to make purchases, the feds swoop in and confiscate shipments?

On its own, this is a huge scandal. But to this scandal-weary citizenry, it hardly registers.

And that is yet another indictment of Trump.

As a way to hurt Americans with by confiscation of all medical supplies. Americans don't come first under trump, he does.

Did I miss the part where they made it a crime to receive live-saving PPE for our healthcare workers?? I know you can't hoard them, but these seem to be masks that are legitimately imported for the use of MDs, nurses, etc.

I dread hurricane season and the possibility of a hit by one. FEMA will not be available to help anyone.

It is too bad that we as civilians and nongovernmental people can't make these N95 masks for ourselves. We have done a good job of making ourselves masks and making them for others. If we could make N95 masks as well, we could bypass the import aspect, where surely FEMA is getting its info, and smuggle masks to our frontline health workers.

I feel that Trump et al WANT the virus to resurge right about election time. There seems to be no other good reason for the goofy, weird things they are doing. It makes no sense at all. Quite baffling, actually.

Don't those people in red states also have children? What are they thinking as they struggle to feed their kids?? Trump isn't going to back up a truck to their garage door and offload pallets of delicious food stuffs for them to survive on.

Well, I wish someone who might be watching the underground survival bunkers would let us know when they see trucks of PPEs backing up to those doors. I'll bet that's where those missing PPEs are now.
