California heat wave draws large crowds to beaches despite stay-at-home order

Summer-like weather across much of California drove large crowds to the beaches Saturday despite a statewide stay-at-home order intended to curb the spread of coronavirus.

Temperatures reached into the 80s and 90s in Southern California, where people were swimming in the Pacific and sunbathing on beaches that had previously been closed to discourage large gatherings. Not all were reopened but some counties had eased restrictions while warning people to maintain social distancing.

"It’s crowded out," said Brian O'Rourke, a lifeguard battalion chief in Newport Beach. "We haven’t had too many issues with [social distancing] as lifeguards. Our primary mission is watching the water. We’ve had dozens of ocean rescues and hundreds of preventative actions."

An estimated 40,000 packed onto Newport Beach on Friday and similar crowds were expected Saturday, The Associated Press reported.

In spite of what some people may think, this pandemic is far from over.

The waves breaking along the shore atomize the water. Any COVID carrier exhaling there is going to have their virus-laden breath mix with the atomized water, spreading the virus a lot farther than 6 feet.

Quarantine fatigue is going to become a real problem, especially as the weather improves across the country.

That's not possible. Well, technically they could, but it would be ignored. I'm just saying the current status quo isn't sustainable. The open ended nature of the current restrictions and plans to reopen isn't going to work. The more things get extended, the less set dates there are for lifting things, then more people are going to think it's never going to end and say screw this.

Part of me just wants to get the virus over with already, because Cuomo says 80% of us are going to get it at some point and I'd rather just get it and be done with it. I'm in my mid-30's and don't have any conditions that make it likely to be fatal, and I don't live or have regular contact with elderly or immunocompromised people. I'm feeling pretty demoralized after hearing Cuomo say that he's still not going to lift the lockdown for downstate on May 15. I'm just grateful I let my husband talk me into moving to the suburbs - if we lived in the city I'd have gone nuts after a week of this.

I've been saying since the beginning that these lockdowns are not sustainable long term. I know this isn't a popular opinion here, but at some point we have to think about the economic fallout, the healthcare fallout, and the potential for societal breakdown.

and if anything happens medical personnel would be called and it takes resources and increases contact for everyone.

One reason LA closed the beaches is because people were not following social distancing guidelines.

The people who are going to the beaches are not necessarily the right wing types but mostly people who just want to go to the beach . They agree with the need to social distance and they aren't demanding everything open up but they see the beach as helping with social distancing but mostly they just want to hang out at the beach.

They don't realize the things i mention at the top about the need to hire life guards and others which will increase contact for these people.
