I was recently forced into retirement - laid off from a manufacturing plant owned by a poorly run company that is sending jobs to Mexico. There's no way in hell anyone is going to hire a 62 year old engineer (despite it being against the law I've found that age discrimination is alive and well) so I opted to file for Social Security and call it quits.
My 401K isn't quite what I wanted it to be before retiring so I've been looking at ideas for earning a little extra income. I decided to try selling used books on eBay - I've been able to find books at thrift stores and yard sales that should earn me a decent profit. I found that books don't sell real well on eBay so decided to sign up to sell on Amazon, I just finished the process at the end up last week.
SO..... This morning I made my very first sale on Amazon........ "Everything Trump Touches Dies".

(459 posts)Not to lose hope on the job front. I'm 61 and in high-tech. I was looking several years ago and ran into so many examples of ageism during interviews. But, then things changed for some reason. Got a great job with a large software company, left that for a better job and just turned down another offer. Not sure where things are going to be after this mess if over but I do sense that experience is being appreciated over cost savings in hirings.

(1,114 posts)Software is one of the fields that has been running low on local talent. Employers are forced to consider hiring from an older age demographic - even though they don't really want to. The fact is that older people bring the average workforce age up which makes group insurance premiums higher. This is what should be outlawed! Universal healthcare would eliminate that problem altogether.

(54,490 posts)Books rarely sell for me either, though I'm only on eBay. But the past two weeks I sold 5, which is about the total for the last 2.5 years. So people are stuck home, with time to burn, not every title is available at e-libraries, and in many states libraries are closed. So test out the market a little further before loading the wagon with inventory, imo.
