changing demographics. I think Trump got in by the skin of his teeth taking that route. In the future I think that gets harder and harder. Once he loses he will be radioactive to the GOP. A lot of his supporters will say they never liked him. Seems like the GOP will have to go back to the George Bush route courting latino's and minorities and this is going to turn off their base.

(90,335 posts)... and act like their will be better days expect them to come back with more racism.
If we're going to choke the shit out of them till their last breath with jail time, fines and social demeaning the kGOP will be reformed to what we saw in Eisenhower admin.

(38,187 posts)Where I live, racism rules. In most of the country, most of the "flyover" states and the south, racism is still front and center. There are lots of hate groups even in the "blue" states like California and NY.
So, they could run another racist easily. I see where it might not work nationwide, if we were talking about population, but we still have the electoral college. I think they can keep right on running racists for ages, considering how the electoral college is set up and how resistant to changing it the vast majority of our politicians are.
Don't kill the messenger. I'm not saying it is right or that I agree with it at all. I wish I could get rid of racism, personally. I despise it. I am just pointing out what is our reality, when it comes to the electoral college and just how bad racism STILL really is in America. The GOP could run racists forever and still get a lot of votes in America.
We need to make it so racism becomes not "normalized." Right now, especially, there is a resurgence of it. Racism has always been part of America, but for a while was considered something we should work on. Somewhere along the way, people stopped working on it and now here we are, back to square one. Racism is normalized. We need to make sure people know that is NOT normal, to un-normalize it somehow, if that makes any sense.

Time for the Repub party to go the way of the Whigs.

(5,443 posts)They have the Supreme Court, and a majority of states are red. They have aces in the holes with Fox News and talk radio to bind and manipulate their voters. They will be fine--unfortunately.

(3,145 posts)In another OP I spoke of a Trumper relative who told me, point blank, that he didn't care if Trump loses in November because he's packed the courts with so many of his appointees that "liberals won't get anything done for the next 25 years" and by then he'll be dead.

(58,785 posts)They've committed to the destruction of representative government to survive, and most of their voters will support that. They've also doubled down on being a white power, Christian, male-dominated party with extremist views and agenda.
This is obviously only sustainable if they succeed in taking over and establishing a strong authoritarian government.
Of course you're so right about the power they currently have. But they're a minority, and the majority of the electorate are against them.
Assuming they lose in November, a great deal will depend on how badly. Lost the presidency for one term, or the next decade? Will they keep control of the senate, or are they mostly benched as a party? Regain control of states they lost in 2018, or lose more?
I don't want to think about what would happen if, due to massive election subversion, they were to win in November and resume consolidating power.

(3,145 posts)I believe it will be quite the opposite: he'll settle into role of GOP kingmaker. He rouses their base in a way that no other Republican since Reagan has and aspiring Republican candidates will be jetting to Florida to kiss his ring and secure his blessing.

(90,671 posts)...not the "soft" racism they've been peddling since Nixon. They'll probably go back to dog-whistles for the knuckle-draggers, plus a slew of candidates that can present themselves to suburban women as sort of polite conservatives.
As Michelle Obama would say: Don't Be Fooled.

(14,047 posts)Move farther to the right.
It doesn't matter if they win or lose, that is how they have reacted to every win and every loss. Positive feedback loops will do that.
And yes, they will not have any trouble deciding that Trump's failures were due to him being "too close to the middle" and not being a "true" conservative. As extreme as the GOP has already become, there is still plenty more over the next hill.
They will look back to 2010 for strategies and weaponize them for 2022.

Underestimate 'republicans". Those f-ers are worse than cockroaches. They always find a way to gain power.

(16,685 posts)This is the best chance for a winning coalition they have. The racism and xenophobia doesnt bother the majority of the anti-taxers enough to abandon the party and it riles up a huge subset that otherwise might sit it out... the "deplorables". I'm seeing the supposed "moderates" using the Trump playbook in primaries now.
